KBB Review Highlights

With a long-range battery that travels 239 miles on a single charge, the 2021 Kia Niro EV has a modern crossover vibe. In a class with the Chevrolet Bolt EV, the Nissan Leaf and its corporate cousin, the Hyundai Kona Electric, and the Niro EV, a handsome two-row 5-seater holds its own with an eye for style and logical layout.

The design of this model is fresh, spacious and modern, yet familiar and reminiscent of the petrol crossovers in the same segment. With flexible, comfortable seats and soft-touch plastics, it doesn’t scream, “I’m electric.” Instead, it subtly marks the brand’s emphasis on upscale design and streamlined features. The car’s above-average height, black roof rails and gently sloping bodywork all point towards a hatchback, but the Niro is classified as a crossover SUV. Kia makes good use of the second-row space, offering plenty of features like wide-opening doors, easy-access LATCH anchors, and 60/40-split folding rear seats.

With two equipment models, the EX and the EX Premium, the well-equipped Niro EV already has wired smartphone integration and a comprehensive safety package in the basic version. Both trim levels are front-wheel drive only and are powered by an electric motor that delivers 201 horsepower and 291 lb.-ft of torque and draws its juice from a lithium-ion battery pack. The entry-level Niro EV features an 8-inch touchscreen, a 6-speaker audio system, 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, keyless entry with push button start, heated side mirrors, heated front seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The EX Premium features a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen, wireless charging capabilities, additional speakers and expanded safety and convenience features, including new navigation-based intelligent cruise control and highway driving assist.

Due to the weight of the battery and low center of gravity, the 2021 Niro EV feels solid and stable when driving. The covered nose indicates EV status, and the long-range battery is enough to reduce the range anxiety of previous versions. Overall, the quiet, zero-emissions experience is nimble, sporty and downright fun, offering drivers an elevated everyday experience in a neat, well-tuned package.
