Chris Pine’s Father Robert Raves About His Directorial Debut (Exclusive)

Chris Pine‘S Pole man The premiere was a family affair, and his proud parents were there to sing his praises.

Robert Pine and Gwynne Gilford joined the former on the red carpet for their son’s big night Crisps Star stops for a chat with ET’s Denny Director.

“I’m very proud,” enthused Robert.

“I’ve been doing it, this May it will be 60 years since I did it,” he said of his own storied career, “and I’ve never done anything like it. I’ve directed a few things, but not my own thing that I helped write, direct, star in and produce.”

Chris plays pool cleaner Darren Barrenmen in the crazy crime comedywhich marks his directorial debut and is scheduled to hit theaters on May 10th. Danny DeVito, Annette Bening, Jennifer Jason LeighAnd DeWanda Wise also star in the film.

“He’s incredibly intelligent,” Robert said of Chris. “I think of all four of us in the family, he’s the smartest. He doesn’t take anything away from my wife or daughter because they’re pretty smart too. I’m the idiot!”

Robert and Gwynne tied the knot in 1969 and welcomed their daughter Katie Pine on September 24, 1972. Chris was born on August 26, 1980.

“There were two seeds in there that made it, and the brain came from her,” Robert praised his wife.

Beyond Chris’ Hollywood success, Robert says there’s something deeper that makes him proud.

“Everyone who says, ‘Oh, you’re Chris Pine’s dad,’ I say, ‘Yeah,’ they say, ‘I worked with him, what a wonderful guy to work with,'” Robert shared .

“This means more to me than anything,” he continued. “More than his films and anything he presents, he is a wonderful addition to this business simply because he is very inclusive.”

Chris told ET Pole man came from an idea that involved his own relationship with his parents.

“As you grow up, you have these ideals of who your parents are, and then you get to know them as adults, so I think that partially makes sense,” Pine told ET at Wednesday’s premiere. “…We wrote it during the pandemic, so it was a lot about being alone. I know what it’s like to feel alone – apart from COVID – and the feeling of being uncomfortable in your skin and looking for love and not. I really know how to find it.

“I think there are two ways to go about it: Either you make a really sad sack movie with lots of string quartets, or you just go as silly as possible,” he shared. “I just decided to go into the world of silly as quickly as possible and make my experimental film.”

Pole man will be released on May 10th.
