Chicago Street Takeover Ends with Tragic Shooting of Possibly Innocent Driver

  • During a street takeover in Chicago, a young man driving through the crowd was shot.
  • A local official suspects he may have had nothing to do with the takeover.
  • Authorities are still trying to find the culprit.

Some will say that street takeovers and sideshows are just child’s play or harmless fun, but a shooting in Chicago proves otherwise. In the early hours of Sunday morning, a young man died at 59th Street and Western Ave in Chicago.

Videos from the scene suggest he was simply trying to make his way through the crowd attending the event when an attendee shot him multiple times. According to ABC7 News, the police believe so too.

Whether he was there or not, the tragedy remains. The driver, Guillermo Caballero Jr., was behind the wheel of a Honda Accord. Photos from different angles show that he had just left the intersection. It looks like the Accord hits at least three different people and one is sitting on the hood as it moves. Then shots are fired.

They appear to come from a person standing in front of the Honda in a black hoodie. Understandably, chaos ensues as people run in all directions to escape the violence.

According to Caballero Jr.’s family and a police report, the young man was on his way home from a boxing match when he encountered the takeover. Officers said that as they approached, they saw 20 to 30 cars driving away from the scene at a high rate of speed. They recovered 10-15 cartridge cases.

He was pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds to the head, chest and arms. At this point, it doesn’t appear that local authorities have a prime suspect. “Street takeovers remain a danger to all communities,” the neighborhood’s city councilman, Ray Lopez, said in a statement to WGN.

“CPD is working diligently to gather as much information as possible about the circumstances surrounding this murder. If you have any information, please contact the police or my office. “I hope Mayor Johnson will make combating these illegal events a priority of his public safety plan for the summer,” Lopez added.

The victim’s family is unhappy with the response of the local police. “I have a lot of bad feelings [Chicago] Because it’s difficult to control, the police don’t do a very good job because they can’t control the guns and the crime,” the victim’s father, Guillermo Caballero Sr., told the Sun-Times. “I don’t want to stay in Chicago anymore.”

A GoFundMe account has been set up to offer support to the victim’s family.
