Billie Jean King Cup: Great Britain Faces a Possible Quarter-final Duel with Champions Canada in the Final

Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez could clash again after Great Britain could face Canada in the Billie Jean King Cup final.

Raducanu defeated Canada’s Fernandez in the 2021 US Open final and they face a rematch if Great Britain beats Germany in their first-round match.

As defending champions, Canada is one of four teams, along with Italy, the Czech Republic and Australia, to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament in Seville later this year.

Billie Jean King Cup final draw

First round: Great Britain against Germany, United States against Slovakia, Spain against Poland, Japan against Romania.

Quarterfinals: Great Britain/Germany against Canada, USA/Slovakia against Australia, Spain/Poland against the Czech Republic, Japan/Romania against Italy.

A total of 12 teams qualified for the final, with the International Tennis Federation announcing last week that the format had been changed from groups to a straight knockout.

Tuesday’s draw for the climax of the women’s team competition also pitted 18-time champions USA and Slovakia against each other. Meanwhile, hosts Spain have to prevail against Poland, with the winner meeting the Czechs.

The La Cartuja Stadium in Seville will host the final with opening round matches from November 12th to 14th, followed by the quarterfinals from November 15th to 17th.

The semi-finals will take place on November 18th and 19th, the final on November 20th. Each tie consists of two singles matches and one doubles match.

Great Britain qualified for the final after Raducanu and Katie Boulter helped them to a 3-1 win over France.

The team’s last appearance in the Billie Jean King Cup final came in 2022, when they lost to Australia in the quarterfinals.

Great Britain and Germany have faced each other six times in the competition, with GB leading the clash 4-2.

Their last meeting was in 1985 when Great Britain emerged 3-0 winners thanks to victories from Jo Durie, Annabelle Croft and Anne Hobbs.
