BCCI Plans to Double Revenue from Domestic Players

In a major move to improve the financial prospects of domestic cricketers, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering a significant hike in remuneration. The proposal, currently under consideration by Ajit Agarkar’s selection committee, aims to ensure that players not involved in the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) are adequately compensated, thereby reducing the income disparity between IPL and non-IPL players to minimize.

While an immediate announcement on increased match fees is not imminent, there is a consensus within the BCCI that the remuneration of domestic cricketers needs to be significantly increased.

How much will players earn now?

It is suggested that players should be able to earn between INR 75 lakh and INR 1 crore annually after playing 10 Ranji Trophy matches.

The current payment structure is that players who have played more than 40 Ranji games will receive INR 60,000 per day, while those with 21 to 40 games will receive INR 50,000 and those with 20 games or less will receive INR 40,000. The reserves are INR 30,000, INR 25,000 and INR 20,000 respectively. This means that an experienced cricketer could earn up to INR 25 lakh if his team reaches the final, while other players in the squad could earn between INR 17 lakh and INR 22 lakh.

The move is part of a broader strategy to encourage domestic players to take part in the Ranji Trophy, the premier domestic red-ball cricket tournament in India. In recent seasons, a number of players have retired from red-ball cricket to reduce the risk of injury and maintain their fitness for the IPL. The BCCI’s efforts to increase the remuneration of domestic players is in line with its aim to promote red-ball cricket and ensure the longevity of the traditional format of the game.

Sunil Gavaskar’s endorsement of the move, which suggests that doubling or tripling Ranji Trophy fees would attract more players to the tournament and reduce payouts, reflects a broader sentiment within the cricket community about the importance of recognizing and rewarding homegrown talent .

“If the fees for the Ranji Trophy can be doubled or tripled, then there will certainly be a lot more people playing the Ranji Trophy and a lot fewer dropouts from the Ranji Trophy than if the fees for attending a Ranji Trophy game are a good fee.” “There will be fewer people opting out for various reasons,” Gavaskar said.

The proposal follows BCCI secretary Jay Shah’s announcement of higher match fees for players participating in Test matches, underlining the board’s commitment to supporting and rewarding domestic cricketers.
