To make classic avocado toast, you only need a few simple ingredients. Here’s what I used:

  • Avocado: Avocado is one of the main ingredients, so you should choose it carefully. Look for avocados that give slightly when squeezed but are not mushy.
  • Bread: You should choose a sturdy, good quality bread. I like to use sourdough or whole wheat bread.
  • Garlic: Rub some fresh garlic on toasted bread while it’s still warm and it gives it incredible flavor.
  • Lemon: A small squeeze of fresh lemon juice adds a touch of brightness and prevents the avocado from browning.
  • Salt pepper: Don’t skip the salt! Just a pinch of salt and pepper enhances the flavor of the avocado toast.
  • Red pepper flakes (optional): This is optional, but gives the avocado toast the kick it needs and a little more spiciness.
  1. Choose your bread wisely: For the base of your avocado toast, use a high-quality, sturdy bread, such as: E.g. sourdough, multigrain or wholemeal bread. Toasted, firm bread holds the mashed avocado and any additional toppings much better than white sandwich bread.
  2. Choosing the perfect avocado: When picking your avocado, look for a blackish, dark green peel, which indicates the avocado has ripened. Also press lightly on the avocado with your finger; the flesh should give slightly under pressure. If it’s muddy, time is over.
  3. Don’t skip the extras! Yes, rubbing a fresh garlic clove on your toast may seem like an unnecessary step, but it adds SO much flavor and perfectly complements this simple meal. The little squeeze of lemon juice also adds just the right amount of brightness and the pinch of salt brings out all the flavors!

  • 2 slices solid bread ($1.00)
  • 1 Garlic clove, peeled ($0.08)
  • 1 medium avocado ($1.33)
  • 1 TL fresh lemon juice ($0.14)
  • 1/8 TL Salt ($0.02)
  • 1/8 TL freshly ground black pepper ($0.02)
  • a pinch of red pepper flakes ($0.02)

  • Cut 2 slices of firm bread. Toast the bread in the toaster or in a pan on the stove until golden brown.

  • Rub the peeled garlic clove over the warm toasted bread, making sure to completely cover the entire surface.

  • Next, cut the avocado in half and remove the pit. Scoop out the avocado flesh from both halves and place in a bowl. Add a small squeeze of fresh lemon juice (about 1 teaspoon), salt and pepper to the bowl and mash the avocado with a fork. I recommend leaving it just a little rough.

  • Divide the avocado mixture and spread it on each slice of toast. Top with a pinch of red pepper flakes and a pinch of sea salt (optional).
