Anne Hathaway Reveals She’s Been Sober for Five Years

While Anne Hathaway As she celebrated her 40th birthday in 2022, she also achieved something else that is considered more of a milestone for her: five years of sobriety.

In an interview with The New York Timesthe Oscar winner who is currently advertising their upcoming film adaptation of Robinne Lee’s book, Your idea, was asked about her 40th birthday and her thoughts on “middle age.”

“There are so many other things that I call milestones. I don’t usually talk about it, but I’ve been sober for over five years,” she says. “This feels like a milestone for me. Forty feels like a gift. The fact is, I hesitate to call things ‘middle-aged’ just because I can be a semantic stickler and get hit by a car later today. We.” I don’t know if that’s middle age. Hathaway continued, “When I get to a point in my life where I have enough room for a hangover, I’ll start drinking again, but that won’t happen until my child leaves the house.”

Like her celebrity colleagues, the mother of two is in good company when it comes to sobriety including Jessica Simpson, EminemAnd Chrissy Teigen have discussed their own travels publicly.

“Not a drop of alcohol in 365 days!” Partly Teigen wrote on Instagram in July 2022 to commemorate her own milestone. “Sometimes I miss being crazy and carefree, but to be honest, towards the end that fun feeling didn’t exist anymore anyway. I drank to stop crazy anxiety, which later mostly disappeared when I – get this – stopped drinking!”

As for this new decade of her life, Hathaway previously told ET some of her goals for this next chapter. “My personal goal is to surf more,” she said. “My professional goal is to surprise myself.”
