Margot Robbie swaps Barbie Land for the wild world of the legendary board game Monopoly.
The 33-year-old actress and her production company LuckyChap, which she runs together with her husband Tom Ackerley And Josie McNamara, have a live-action feature film based on the real estate game in the works. Robbie and her team will produce the project alongside Hasbro Entertainment, which distributes Monopoly.
Monopoly has been around since 1935 and countless versions of the board game have been developed. The players’ task is to buy real estate and collect rent from their competitors without risking bankruptcy and prison.
Lionsgate, which owns the film’s development rights, had been looking for someone to write the project since the media company acquired Hasbro’s film and TV arm eOne in December 2023. While no details about the possible plot have been revealed, the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group has chair Adam Fogelson hinted that LuckyChap has some ideas in mind.
“I couldn’t imagine a better production team for this beloved and iconic brand than LuckyChap,” Fogelson said at CinemaCon on Wednesday, April 10. “They are exceptional producers who choose their projects with great consideration and care and approach Monopoly with a clear mindset.” Viewpoint. We’re thrilled to be working with the entire LuckyChap team on what we all believe could be their next blockbuster.”
LuckyChap also released a statement expressing its excitement: “Monopoly is a top property – pun fully intended.” Like all the best IPs, this game has enjoyed great popularity worldwide for generations and we are very excited to share this game together to bring to life with the wonderful teams at Lionsgate and Hasbro.”
Robbie’s commitment to the project comes less than a month after she and Lucky Chap were tapped to adapt the feature debut of “The Sims,” one of the computer world’s most popular games.
From Monopoly to The Sims, Robbie can’t seem to get enough of toy movies after the success of her adaptation Barbie Movie. Robbie played the title character, based on the iconic Mattel doll of the same name. Barbie earned more than a billion dollars at the box office in the summer of 2023. While Robbie was praised by fans for her portrayal of Barbie, she confessed that she is taking a short break from acting.
“I think everyone is probably sick of seeing me at the moment. I should probably get off screens for a while,” she said deadline in January. “Honestly, if I did another movie too soon, people would say, ‘You again? We just spent an entire summer with her. We’re over it.’”
