2025 Chery Omoda 7 Unveiled as New Plug-in Hybrid RAV4 Competitor

Chery is expanding its Omoda crossover range with a new mid-size plug-in hybrid SUV.

The 2025 Chery Omoda 7 will sit between the Omoda 5, which led the Chinese brand’s return to Australia, and the Omoda C9, a rebadged Exeed RX/Yaoguang that has been registered for sale in Australia.

Unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show, the Omoda 7 will be launched globally in 2025. Chery Australia has not yet confirmed when it will be available here.

Chery hasn’t released many images or specifications, but confirmed that the Omoda 7 uses its latest hybrid powertrain architecture with a maximum range of 1250kg on a full tank and battery.

According to a presentation at the Beijing Motor Show, which was attended by Malaysian branches Paul TanThe Omoda 7 features a turbocharged 1.5-liter plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain that offers an electric range of 95 km.

While we don’t have total system output, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV unveiled in Beijing – which also uses a 1.5-litre engine – has a total output of 255kW and 525Nm.

The Omoda 7 reportedly uses a stretched, revised version of the Omoda 5’s platform and is 4621mm long, 1872mm wide and 1673mm tall with a 2700mm wheelbase.

This makes it 6 mm longer, 7 mm wider and 17 mm higher than a Toyota RAV4, with a 10 mm longer wheelbase.

Like the Omoda 5 and Tiggo 7 Pro, there is a distinctive radiator grille. However, unlike these models, it features an unusual hexagonal pattern and a frameless look.

In addition, it doesn’t extend all the way to the hood, leaving a closed area between the headlights – which is a bit reminiscent of the Lexus RX.

There’s a kinked C/D pillar treatment like the Omoda 5 and Tiggo 7 Pro, while there’s also a contrasting color roof, black wheel arches and a strong shoulder line.

At the back, there’s a stylish tailgate with the taillight assembly extending across the rear.

Inside there is a 15.6-inch freestanding infotainment touchscreen and a small, freestanding digital instrument cluster.

Two wireless charging pads form an angled bridge between the center console and the dashboard. There doesn’t appear to be any physical climate controls, as almost every function is controlled via the large touchscreen.

According to Chery, the Omoda 7 features an intelligent voice assistant, a scent system, active noise cancellation and a “12+2” speaker sound system that offers a “concert hall quality sound experience”.

The carmaker treats Omoda as a standalone brand in markets such as the UK and South Africa, while here and in China Omoda is a sub-brand alongside the separate Tiggo family of SUVs under the Chery banner.

However, Chery will launch another brand, Jaecoo, in Australia in the second half of 2024. However, its first model, the J7, is sold in China as Chery.
