Meta begins testing virtual goods sales in Horizon Worlds, a creative program for creators

Meta is testing new tools that allow makers to sell virtual items and effects within Meta’s social virtual reality app, Horizon Worlds. The new feature rolls out to a select number of makers in the US and Canada where Horizon Worlds is currently available. Manufacturers selling items will see a Commerce and Gizmo tab in the app’s creation mode. In addition, Meta is testing a creator bonus program in the US, where creators are paid to build worlds that attract the most time. Creators will be paid at the end of the month for using new features and tools that the company launches.

Meta announced Monday the testing of new monetization tools for Horizon Worlds creators via a blog post. The latest update lets a select group of creators create digital items and effects that they can then sell directly within the virtual social space. These can be fashion items like paid access to a new part of a world. Users over 18 in the US and Canada can purchase this item. Creators can use the Commerce and Gizmo tab in the app’s Create mode to create items they want to sell.

Furthermore, Meta is also starting to test a Horizon Worlds Creator Bonus program to encourage creators to use their tools and features to expand their worlds. These bonuses are not subject to fees, and creators are paid at the end of the month for their progress toward the goal proposed by the company. Meta’s bonus program is currently available to US participants.

The company’s various policies for Horizon Worlds, including the Behavior in VR Policy and Horizon Worlds Prohibited Content Policy, also apply to the latest bonus program.

The parent company of Facebook, which changed its name to Meta last year, contributes a lot to the emergence of the metaverse. The company has previously added Instagram Badges for users 18 years and older in select regions that allow creators to earn money from their followers. Badges can show users support for creators during a Live video on the platform.
