Zimbabwe Cricket Announces the Start of a Six-team T10 Tournament

Zimbabwe Cricket has announced the launch of its first private franchise league, a T10 competition, in collaboration with Mulk International, the organization responsible for the creation of the Abu Dhabi T10.

The Zim Afro T10 will be the six-team competition scheduled to take place in March 2023. The sixth season of the Abu Dhabi T10, which has been running since 2017, has just ended.

The competition begins with a duel between six teams and takes place in March of the following year. More information is expected to be released in the following days, including participating teams, player auction dates, fixture lists and other details.

The league is expected to do wonders for the development of cricket in the African nation as most other nations have already established their own franchise leagues and are seeing positive results from them.

“We are excited to announce the launch of Zimbabwe’s own franchise-based T10 league, a powerful format that we believe is exactly what our changing, fast-paced world needs right now.” ZC Chairman Tabengwa Mukuhlani said.

Zimbabwe recently put in a spectacular performance at the T20 World Cup 2022:

Zimbabwe cricket has not been spared from the country’s economic woes; The sport has endured a severe debt crisis, a temporary ban on its administration at the ICC and the expulsion of some of its most famous players (Heath Streak and Brendan Taylor) due to their involvement in corruption.

However, the sport appears to be picking up steam after Zimbabwe’s men’s team advanced to the T20 World Cup Super 12 and their women’s team narrowly missed out on qualifying for the tournament to be held in South Africa in 2023.

With more international matches on the horizon, Zimbabwe is looking to break into the lucrative league scene and as a result of the launch of the SA20, an IPL-only T20 league, their South African neighbors have also entered the T10 market.

The tournament is scheduled to begin on March 29, 2023. Participating franchises, player auction dates, fixture lists and other details will be announced at a later date.
