Zendayathe queen of fashion surprises, returned to the Met Gala after a five-year hiatus and left jaws dropped and cameras flashing with her sensational ensemble.

Zendaya, known for her fearless fashion choices, left attendees and fans alike in stitches when she arrived at the gala without a specified dress. Despite the meticulous planning typical of such high-profile events, her longtime stylist Law Roach revealed New York Times that the dress was made shortly before the event.
“I didn’t see Zendaya’s dress,” Roach revealed. “We went on two press tours – Dune 2 And challenger – and make two Fashion Covers. The dress hasn’t even been made yet. They won’t fit until Saturday.
Since the Met Gala’s theme was “The Garden of Time,” Zendaya rose to the challenge with signature flair and brought a touch of fashion fantasy to the red carpet. Despite the tight schedule, her ensemble was nothing short of spectacular.
In a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most talked-about fashion moments of the 2024 Met Gala, Rita Watnick, the owner of LILY et Cie, a renowned boutique in Beverly Hills, told ET how Zendaya’s stunning ensemble was created.
Rita recounted how it all unfolded, crediting Zendaya’s stylist Law Roach with the vision. “Law came to visit, not really looking for the Met, and when it came to the dress, he said he was going to look for Zendaya on the steps of the Met,” Rita explained. “He really wanted, in my opinion, to create the most epic moment when he walked up the stairs.”
Surprisingly, the journey to the perfect dress began during Oscar season. Rita revealed: “It was actually around the time of the Oscars, and he was actually looking for a dress for Zendaya for the Oscars.” However, it wasn’t until weeks later that Law mentioned his intention to invite Zendaya to try on a dress for the Met Gala.
“Weeks later he said he wanted to invite her to try on a dress for the Met,” Rita revealed. “I think we only tried on the dress about three weeks ago.”
Reflecting on the dress she chose, Rita described it as the original runway piece from John Galliano’s first collection for Givenchy in Spring/Summer 1996. “It’s the only one,” she insisted. “I think it’s actually a perfect Met-themed dress.”
Explaining the design and meaning of the dress, Rita noted, “Well, it’s the original runway piece, and of course it’s the only one, and John.” [Galliano]. I think it’s actually a perfect dress for the Met’s theme because his inspiration for the dress came from very historical women, Marchesa Casati and the Countess Castiglione, and so it’s all informed by the past and the irony of the dress, that it is so portable and very new and forward-looking.
Rita also highlighted the dress’s unique features, including the black and charcoal taffeta fabric, voluminous skirts and spectacular long train. “It’s based on two truly spectacular historical women, incredible in fact,” she added. “In that respect, it’s the theme and the fact that the dress is 27 years old, so it’s kind of a real resurrection.”
Rita further mentioned that Zendaya actually bought the dress from her.
While Rita didn’t reveal the exact price Zendaya paid for the dress, she did note, “I have to say it’s worth a lot more now that she’s wearing it.”
The Emmy Award-winning actress has Roach to thank in large part for making a name for herself in the fashion world and putting together her themed outfits for her press tours. During her last Dune: Part 2 And challenger At events, the star and her style confidant wowed crowds around the world with their science fiction and tennis-inspired cuts.
