• Nearly 2,000 Lectron NACS-to-CCS charger adapters are being recalled due to a faulty latch that may fail to securely connect to Tesla Superchargers.
  • Interestingly, the recall was initiated after a YouTuber reported a problem with his Lectron adapter.
  • The recall affects adapters manufactured between March 14 and April 8, 2024.

Charging adapters have been in the news a lot lately, with a number of automakers recently gaining access to the Tesla Supercharger Network. However, Lectron is now recalling 1,624 Vortex Tesla Supercharger (NACS) to Combined Charging System (CCS) adapters.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the adapter may not lock securely onto the charger. In this case, the unsecured charger “may be disconnected without turning off power to the charger, increasing the risk of injury from electric shock.”

The Safety Recall Report expands on this by saying that some adapters – manufactured between March 14 and April 8 – have a locking pin that “deviates from the intended design.” This can prevent it from locking securely, meaning that “the charging coupler may be forcibly removed by the user without depressing the NACS latch.”

Interestingly, the recall was triggered by a YouTuber. The report doesn’t mention which one it is, but says that Dropcases LTD – which manufactured the component – became aware of a video in which a user said he couldn’t connect his adapter to a Tesla Supercharger connect.

The company contacted the YouTuber and asked him to return the component for evaluation. This also triggered an internal investigation and it was ultimately determined that “an error in the supplier’s processes resulted in a limited number of non-compliant units being shipped to customers.”

Dropcases LTD will replace the adapters with new ones that feature a straight edge NACS locking pin to prevent removal of the charging coupler unless the NACS lock is depressed. It’s also worth noting that the adapters were sold directly to consumers and no other OEMs or retailers were involved.
