When Can Leeds United Be Promoted? Current Tables, Fixtures, Results and Dates

Leeds United has a rich history and a loyal fan base. After relegation last season, the Whites have an immediate chance of promotion to the Premier League, which is an exciting prospect for fans.

With just one Championship game remaining, the Whites are no longer in control of their promotion fate as they handed Leicester City their Premier League tickets after being beaten by QPR on Friday evening.

Their defeat in west London also means Ipswich have a chance of completing the promotion race this week. The Tractor Boys, who still have two games in hand against the Whites, can be two clear of Leeds ahead of their trip to Coventry in midweek. If Ipswich win both games, Daniel Farke’s side will go into the play-offs.

Of course it’s not the end of the world if the automatic promotion places fall out of reach, but the scary thing about the play-offs is that it can sometimes be like a lottery.

Let’s take a look at how things could pan out for Leeds and what fans could expect…

Leeds United season 2022-2023

The 2022/23 season was one to forget for Leeds. However, there were some memorable moments along the way, including defeats of Liverpool and Chelsea. However, there have been some managerial changes as Jesse Marsch, Michael Skubala, Javi Gracia and Sam Allardyce have all been at the helm.

For Leeds, the collapse at the end of the season was crucial as they conceded three goals in 20 minutes against Arsenal, five in just over 30 minutes against Crystal Palace at home, six in 55 minutes against Liverpool and two in five minutes against Bournemouth. Leeds broke the Premier League record for the leakiest defense in a single month by conceding 23 goals in April alone.

They should have gained new energy and confidence after the home win against Nottingham Forest on April 4th; Instead, they took two of the next 27 available points, sacked their manager and fell even deeper into trouble.

In the end they finished in 19th place with 31 points for the season.

Leeds United 2023-2024 season

Leeds United have had a very slow start to the current Championship season, winning just one of their first five games. They were eliminated on penalties in the Carabao Cup in the second round as Salford City sailed through.

In the FA Cup, Leeds made it to the fifth round and probably could have gone further had they missed their chances, but it was Chelsea who emerged 3-2 winners at Stamford Bridge.

However, things have changed since the league’s slow start, with Los Blancos finding themselves in a four-way battle for automatic promotion, which could be to everyone’s advantage at the end of the season.

When-Leeds-United-could-promote-to-the-Premier-League

As previously mentioned, Leeds are firmly in the race for promotion from the Championship. The top two are automatically promoted to the Premier League, with teams in 3rd to 6th places progressing to the play-offs.

Leeds’ loss to QPR has left Ipswich on the hook to finish the automatic promotion race this week. With Leicester assured of a place in next season’s Premier League, Ipswich will join them if they can win both games before the final day of play next weekend.

If Ipswich lose points in any of their games against Hull City and Coventry City, the race will go to the final day. However, Kieran McKenna’s side only need two points from these games to stay in control next weekend. The Tractor Boys host likely relegated Huddersfield Town, while Leeds face the tougher task of Southampton at Elland Road, with the Saints virtually out of the top two at the time of writing.

Simply put, if Ipswich win this weekend they will advance with another win against Coventry Tuesday, April 30th. Otherwise everything comes down to the last round of the game Saturday, May 4thAll games start at 12.30 p.m.

Now Leeds can only hope that Ipswich cannot overtake them before next Saturday. Leeds may be able to use goal difference to their advantage, but Ipswich know five points from their last three games will be enough to return to the Premier League for the first time since 2002.

Nothing final will be decided this weekend, but it could all come down to their trip to Coventry this Tuesday.

Leeds United results 2023-2024

Leeds’ shock result against QPR means promotion is no longer in their grasp and, having started the calendar year so well, their form since Easter has been terrible for a team in search of promotion.

Having 90 points at this point is by no means a terrible season, but they are likely to miss out on automatic promotion, barring a similarly disastrous crash out of Ipswich. Looking back at some of their recent results, they will have themselves to blame.
