Vidya Malvade Reveals Why Shah Rukh Khan Was Called ‘Papa’ By ‘Chak De!’ India’ Girls

Shah Rukh Khan is always loved for his humble nature towards each of his co-stars. Actresses like Kajol, Rani Mukerji and many others have spoken a lot about SRK’s way of looking after his female co-stars while shooting their films. Well, Vidya Malvade, who played the role of ‘Vidya Sharma’ in the film, Chak De! India revealed many unknown anecdotes about the superstar that she came across while filming her film.

Speaking of which Chak De! India, it was one of the blockbuster films of 2007. It was made on a budget of Rs 20 crore and grossed Rs 108 crore worldwide. SRK played the role of a trainer to train sixteen actresses including Vidya, alongside Chitrashi Rawat, Sagarika Ghatge, Anaitha Nair, Tanya Abrol and many others. In an interview with India Today, Vidya Malvade spoke about her Chak De! India co-star Shah Rukh Khan and praised him for his razor-sharp mind. Furthermore, Vidya revealed that his perfume played an important role during the shooting of the film. Vidya mentioned that the actor always smells fresh and pleasant and mentioned that the girls were always informed when he came to the sets.

Furthermore, the actress shared that Shah Rukh Khan had a different energy level when he came to the sets. Vidya revealed how SRK took all the girls to watch the film one evening. Don, and then they partied until 6 a.m. Furthermore, Vidya stated that SRK never stopped their entertainment activities and he also guided the girls through the shoot. This made him a father figure to them, which is why the girls called him “Papa” behind his back. Vidya added how nice Shah Rukh was to them and joked

“He brings out everyone with the energy that he has and radiates. We can learn and take so much from him.”


Vidya Malvade once spoke about how SRK helped them improve their acting skills

Earlier, when Vidya graced Siddharth Kannan’s podcast on his YouTube channel, the actress recalled how SRK helped it Chak De! India Girls during the shoot. Vidya mentioned that the sixteen girls used to be very insecure about the timing of their films. In addition, they used to be very tense because of their different menstrual cycles and the resulting mood swings. However, SRK then played a big role in taking her out of the crazy and chaotic environment of uncertainty and doubt.

It was Shah Rukh Khan who helped them improve their acting skills. Vidya recalled this and mentioned that some of the girls were complete newbies in the industry. However, SRK helped them get comfortable with the camera. Furthermore, Vidya shared that all the girls formed a sisterly bond while working together and they even have a WhatsApp group called ‘Bad, Bad Girls’, named after a song from their film. She said this even after 17 years of the release of Chak De! India, they are still very close to each other. Vidya mentioned:

“He was so nice and accommodating. The team was like his team. He had a huge influence on all of us at that time. Many of the girls on the team were new. They knew little about the light and angle when taking their photos. They just stood there and said their lines. But he (SRK) was instrumental in saying, “If you stand like this, you will get better light and your face will be visible.” He helped make the shots better.


When it comes to work, Vidya has been a part of many films including Mismatched, 1920: Evil Returns, Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara!, Inside Edge 2and many more, apart from Chak De! India.
