Tom Moody Talks About the Difficulties of Selecting India’s World Cup Squad

Tom Moody, a respected commentator and cricket expert, has highlighted the complexities of team selection faced by various countries for the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup. Moody described the upcoming World Cup team selections as one of the most complicated, citing the abundance of resources. particularly in spin bowling and the middle order.

“This is, in my opinion, one of the most complex decisions a country has to make before the World Cup, simply because it is a sport where resources are at stake. The resources are endless, not so much in the fast bowling space but in the spin front, middle order and top order,” he said while speaking on Star Sports Press Room Show.

“It’s unbelievable what there is. And you could go as far as to argue that you can pick five different teams and they’ll all be equally good. The main point I want to make is that you have to have a left-right combination because you’re going to get into a situation, especially if the surface offers a little bit of curve or they’re slow, every team is going to find themselves with a left arm -Set up spinners to open the bowling,” he added.

Moody suggested the opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal and stressed the need to avoid exposing potential weaknesses early in the game. Regarding the crucial number three position, Moody acknowledged Virat Kohli’s recent form and impressive track record, which make him a strong contender for the spot.

“It’s an absolute no-brainer and a proven way to slow things down, if not get an early wicket. So you don’t want to do this before you’ve shown your opponent a potential weakness. That’s why I’m definitely betting on Rohit and Jaiswal at the top. The discussion is whether Virat is your number three? I think given the form he has shown recently and considering his record in international games and on the big stage is pretty phenomenal, he would have to be seriously considered as a number three,” he added.

Additionally, Moody highlighted the uncertainty surrounding conditions, particularly in venues such as New York. He advocated the inclusion of experienced players to overcome unfamiliar conditions and counteract the exuberance of youthful opponents.

“The other point is that the four games will take place in New York. We do not know that. We’re guessing what the conditions will be. I’d rather have an old head, a seasoned activist, navigating what may or may not be out there in the middle, as opposed to this kind of youthful, brash approach that takes on a situation where the surface and the conditions do not allow this to be done. So I would rather have that experienced old head who can handle this challenge for me to get me into the tournament where I have to play in the final,” Moody concluded.
