Tiger Woods“Daughter Sam will not follow in her father’s footsteps.
“You know, when she was growing up, golf took her father away from her,” Woods, 48, said Carson Daly during an appearance on Wednesday, May 1, on Today. “I had to pack up and leave and was gone for weeks, and that had a negative connotation.”
Sam’s thoughts about the sport led the father-daughter duo to agree on other things.
“We have developed our own relationship, our own rapport, which is outside of golf. We do things that [don’t] “Golf is part of it,” said the athlete. “In the meantime, my son, [Charlie], and I do everything that has to do with golf. It’s completely different.”
Woods shares Sam, 16, and Charlie, 15, with his ex-wife Elin Nordegren. Charlie attempted to qualify for the US Open late last month but failed to advance to the next round after a local qualifier in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
Woods told Daly, 50, that while Charlie usually listens to his golf advice, there have been “some setbacks” as he’s gotten older.
“He’s 15 years old,” he said. “It’s what happens – it’s what teenagers go through. They’re trying to find their own place in the world.”
Although golf isn’t Sam’s thing, the teenager has supported her father at numerous tournaments over the years and was there when he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in March 2022.
“Over the years, on the soccer fields and at golf tournaments, Charlie and I became aware of how famous he really is,” Sam said while introducing Woods at the induction ceremony. “I mean, how can a guy who still FaceTimes his friends about Marvel-DC schedules and goes to Comic-Con dressed as Batman be one of the greatest golfers of all time?”
Elsewhere in her speech, Sam referenced the professional golfer’s car accident in February 2021, in which he injured both legs.
“We didn’t know whether you could come home with two legs or not. Now you’re not only about to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, but you’re standing on your own two feet here,” Sam said. “That’s why you deserve this, because you’re a fighter.”
Woods has also overcome his difficult history with 44-year-old Nordegren and formed a united front as co-parents. The exes divorced in 2010 after Woods publicly disclosed highly publicized affairs with multiple women, including a full-fledged relationship with her Rachel teachermade headlines in 2009.
During a 2015 interview with TimeWoods noted that Nordegren became one of his “best friends” after their divorce.
“We can pick up the phone and talk to each other all the time. … It’s fun. She tells me about her life, I talk to her about my life. We try to help each other at every opportunity,” he said. “And we work with the children on it, the parent program. She’s one of my best friends now, and that’s all because of my kids.”
