According to Harlin, the search for their clues was lengthy but necessary.
“We searched long and hard for our scream queen. When I spoke to Madelaine, I just knew that she was an extraordinary person, an extraordinary actress, and that’s what it took to play this role. In the same way, after a long and intense search, we found Froy Gutierrez, another wonderful young actor,” he explained. “We wanted a couple that felt natural and relaxed together. Their relationship may not be identical to the relationship in the original film, but it feels very natural and very real, and that was key to this film and trilogy for me. It’s the realism.”

What is the premise?
According to the synopsis, Maya and Ryan are a couple who travel across the country together to start a new life. When their car breaks down, they are forced to spend the night in a remote Airbnb house. The couple are then terrorized by three murderous masked strangers.

Was the entire trilogy made into a film?
All three films were shot simultaneously in Bratislava, Slovakia, which Harlin described as “the challenge of a lifetime.”
“I really accepted it too. On a Monday morning I could shoot the second chapter, on Monday afternoon I could shoot the first chapter and on Tuesday morning I could shoot the third chapter,” he said Weekly entertainment in October 2022. “It was incredibly demanding for the actors, for the continuity in terms of makeup and wardrobe and for my cinematographer because we wanted to create a visual language that evolves in such a way that the films become bigger, more epic, the further we go [on]. It just kept all of our juices pumping the whole time.”
What is “The Strangers” trilogy based on?
The original home invasion horror film was released in 2008 and starred Liv Tyler And Scott Speedman. Your characters Kristen and James live in a vacation home inhabited by three masked criminals. How did Madelaine Petsch overcome the challenge of filming?
“When I took on this task, it seemed far too big for anyone to ever handle. Actually, I thought, “I’m overwhelmed.” But when I got there, all three films were playing in a short period of time. So [once I approached it like] “I shot a long film and everything made sense to me,” the actress said exclusively Us weekly in July 2023. “I was able to put this puzzle together as if I were basically making a long movie, a TV show, or anything else. It was actually quite easy to wrap my head around once I realized how long it was taking.”

How were the masks created?
“We felt that it was central to the film that the masks were the same,” Harlin said EW in October 2023. “The masks in The Strangers do not resemble the Batsuit or anything that evolves over years. For us, the strangers are the strangers, and as a viewer I wanted to see them exactly as they were in the original film. Is there a place to find these masks? No. It was about examining what they looked like, how they were made, how they fit on the actors’ faces and how [to] give the same impression. It was one of the real challenges of the film.”
How is this different from the original?
Harlin said it was important not to leave any “unanswered questions” with her trilogy.
“At the beginning of [original] “In the movie, you find out that Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman are fighting, you never find out what they’re fighting about,” he noted in October 2023. “We can answer questions here. We’ve spent a lot of time answering those exact questions for the original fans and making sure that there are lots of homages to the original fans and that they’re excited and feel like they’re on the ride that they’ve always been loved it, make it more modern and longer and answer questions.”
In May 2024, Harlin promised that horror fans would get answers, telling Variety: “We wanted to take the audience on a journey.” The films become more epic as time goes on, but without the feeling of claustrophobia, fear and tone lose that corresponds to reality. As a filmmaker, your instinct when making an action film is that the bigger the better. In this case, my job was to control myself and always make sure it was real. Often smaller was actually better. The most important thing is that the films maintain a sense of reality, but where we take the audience in the second and third films will be very surprising.”
Harlin also hinted at a possible four-and-a-half-hour director’s cut, adding, “That’s in our heads.” That’s definitely what we want to do. We want to cut the entire sheet together. We know exactly how to do it, then we make a film and see who these die-hard fans are who come to the cinema for four and a half hours. I don’t know if we need a break so people can get something to eat and go to the bathroom, but I definitely want to have this event and see if people can endure four and a half hours of anxiety and fear and terror and despair. “
