The Revised Rolls Royce Cullinan Gets Daytime Running Lights, Illuminated Radiator Grille and Goodwood Clouds on the Seats

  • The mid-life refresh of the Cullinan SUV brings styling tweaks, interior tech improvements and more options
  • Changes to the base Cullinan and the sporty Black Badge version reflect the SUV’s urban use and younger demographic
  • Outside there are new DRLs, 23-inch wheels and an illuminated grille; Digital dashboard and mini Spirit of Ecstasy debut in the interior

Rolls Royce was hardly quick to come to market with the original Cullinan, but the full-size SUV segment has changed a lot since 2018. Almost every premium car manufacturer is pushing the boundaries of luxury, and brands like Ferrari and Aston Martin have thrown their hat into the ring. Then it’s the perfect time for Rolls Royce to give the greatest SUV of them all a facelift.

There’s nothing radical to report about the changes to the base Cullinan Series II and its sporty Black Badge sibling, which is great in its own way because it means both versions still feature V12 power. The twin-turbo engine produces 563 hp (570 hp) in the standard version and 592 hp (600 hp) and 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque in the Black Badge version.

But the facelift brings numerous detailed changes that reflect what Rolls has learned about buyers of its most popular model. One of those things is that Cullinans spend a lot of time in the city, most are now owner-driven and the customers are incredibly young by Rolls-Royce standards at just 43 years old. Do you always have the feeling that your expectations are not being met?

Visually, the new SUV is easily identified by the drooping, mustache-shaped DRLS that frame the square front end and, according to Rolls, are inspired by urban skyscrapers. The lower bumper is also new, but a more important change is arguably the introduction of a backlit grille for the first time.

The revamped interior features a full-width digital dashboard modeled after that of the Specter EV, a tiny Spirit of Ecstasy figurine beneath the clock, and onboard access to Whispers, who we were surprised wasn’t a shady gentleman is not a club in an industrial area in Southampton, but the name of Rolls Royce’s private membership app.

New materials include gray-stained ash wood, a bamboo viscose fabric used in the Duality Twill interior, and a perforated seating pattern designed to look like the clouds above Roll’s Goodwood home.

Black Cullinan badge

Most of the key changes brought to the Cullinan Series II also apply to the redesigned Black Badge, which the Rolls sub-brand describes as a “disruptive alter ego”. A radiator grille, Spirit of Ecstasy and, for the first time, window trim in black instead of chrome contribute to this personality. The rear bumper and tailgate trim as well as the exhaust tailpipes are finished in black chrome with a mirror effect and the wheels have a diameter of 23 inches.

Inside, there’s the same digital dashboard, but the pocket-sized Spirit of Ecstasy is black rather than chrome, and the interior is decorated with carbon trim, the 23 pieces of which require six coats of paint and a total of 21 days to produce. And while the Black Badge isn’t a Nurburgring weapon, it does make more concessions to sporty driving in the form of more aggressive throttle and transmission calibration and shorter brake pedal travel.
