The long-awaited “next generation” – really current Generation – version of Fallout 4 will be released on April 25th, which somewhat coincides with the great interest and critical acclaim for the Fallout television series that has just started airing on Amazon Prime Video. This update is also accompanied by additional content for all players, giving the nine-year-old game a refresh as many tend to return.
The free upgrade announced Thursday by Bethesda Game Studios makes Fallout 4 a native application on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
PC players with versions of Fallout 4 via Steam, the Microsoft Store and GOG will receive a title update with stability, mods and bug fixes. A title update for the PS4 and Xbox One versions also brings stability improvements as well as login and quest fixes.
Finally, as part of the game’s overall modernization, Fallout 4 will be available on the Epic Games Store on April 25th and will also be verified by Steam Deck.
What else will Fallout 4 players get in the big April 25 update?
The content drop is available to all players of Creation Club, the curated and verified mod shop for the game that Bethesda launched in 2017. This includes:
- Echoes of the Past, a new questline that brings pre-war villains The Enclave into Fallout 4’s storyline. They were the antagonist faction of 2008’s Fallout 3 and had no role in the latest game. “Can you stop the Enclave from spreading its dangerous ideology and gaining a foothold in the Commonwealth?” Bethesda wrote.
- These include the Enclave Colonel uniform as well as new themed items for workshops, as well as a set of weapon and armor skins, two weapons and two sets of power armor previously released through the Creation Club.
- Players also receive the Makeshift Weapon Pack, which includes a leaf blower converted into a baseball launcher; a nail gun; and a rocket launcher that fires a piggy bank, the punch of which is anything but sweet.
- There are also a number of Halloween-themed workshop items. Longtime players know that in the Fallout story, the nuclear annihilation occurred in late October, before Halloween, and the surface ruins froze somewhat at that time. These relics will also add spookiness to players’ settlements all year round.
This is the latest wave of content updates and promotions to generate new interest in the franchise following the show’s premiere. The latest game in the series, the live service multiplayer role-playing game Fallout 76, is free for Amazon Prime subscribers as a Prime Gaming benefit starting April 11th. Fallout 76 will also be free next weekend until April 15 for all Xbox One or Series X owners, even if they don’t have an Xbox Game Pass Core subscription that grants multiplayer access.
And don’t forget, mobile gamers who enjoy Fallout Shelter will see characters from the series, including Lucy and The Ghoul, as well as themes, weapons and outfits from the series in their vaults.
