The Morning After: Tesla Settles Lawsuit Over Fatal Model X Crash

In 2019, the family of Apple engineer Wei Lun Huang (aka Walter Huang) sued Tesla, a year after he died when his Model X crashed with Autopilot engaged. The automaker settled the lawsuit on the very day jury selection was supposed to take place. Tesla’s lawyers asked the court to seal the settlement agreement so that the payout amount would not be made public.

Tesla confirmed shortly after the accident that Autopilot was engaged at the time of the crash, but also insisted that Huang had time to react and had a clear view of the bulkhead. In a press statement, the company insisted that the driver was at fault and that the accident could only have happened if Huang “wasn’t paying attention to the road.”

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation concluded that Huang was playing a cell phone game, but could not confirm whether he was holding the phone during the impact.

The big problem with the boom in true wireless earbuds is that they can almost never be repaired. Once the batteries are empty, they’re done. However, Fairphone has built a pair of headphones that not only have removable batteries, but also easily replaceable ones. The Fairbuds are made from 70 percent recycled and fair materials, while the rare earth elements and tin are 100 percent recycled. They cost 149 euros, and it’s likely we’ll see them in the US at some point, just like the phones.
