The Morning After: Meta Introduces a Limited Edition Xbox-inspired Quest Headset

Meta announced that it would open the Quest’s operating system to third-party companies so they can build their own headsets. The Quest OS will be renamed Meta Horizon OS and already has interest from two companies.

ASUS’ Republic of Gamers (ROG) brand is working on new “performance gaming” headsets, while Lenovo is focusing on devices for “productivity, learning and entertainment.” Perhaps most intriguing, however, is Meta’s statement that it’s also working on a limited-edition Xbox “inspired” Quest headset. (Microsoft and Meta also recently worked together to bring Xbox cloud gaming to the Quest.) While it could just be a remastered Quest 3, this collaboration could lead to future headsets designed entirely for Microsoft’s consoles became. If PlayStation can have VR, then Xbox certainly can too.

The EU Commission has raised concerns that this type of “task and reward” design language could harm the mental health of young users by “stimulating addictive behavior.”

The Russian Investigative Committee opened an investigation into Meta in March 2022. It alleged that Stone incited extremist activity after he lifted “a ban on calls for violence against the Russian military on his platforms.” Stone said Meta was “temporarily” allowing some posts to remain on its platforms that had previously been removed for inciting violence, but noted that the company would continue to ban “credible calls for violence against Russian civilians.”
