Every April, hundreds of thousands of people descend on the Coachella Valley for two weekends of music, $25 Caesar salads and dust-related health complications. The rest of us experience the festival on our mobile phones and follow it from the comfort of our sofas via our social media feeds.

Chappell Roan rises
If you were exposed to the pop music scene before April 12th, you may have been aware of Chappell Roan’s growing popularity. If not, Roan would be hard to miss based on his performances at Coachella. Posts about her performance on the first weekend and her life-size butterfly outfit on the second boosted her streaming numbers and boosted her latest single, “Good Luck, Babe!” to no. Number 77 on the Billboard 100, her first entry on the charts.

Lana del Rey duet with Billie
In her first weekend set, Lana del Rey sang her classics, brought out Billie Eilish to sing “Video Games” and “Ocean Eyes,” and ended her set by riding away on the back seat of a motorcycle. On stage, Eilish told the audience that del Rey is “the reason half of you bitches exist, including me,” echoing sentiments she expressed in an interview with del Rey in February Interview magazine. Fans called the set one of Del Rey’s best and were upset with critics who found it disappointing.

Kesha and Renee Rapp remix “Tik Tok” (the song)
Singer Renee Rapp brought Kesha on stage during her set to perform her 2010 hit “Tik Tok.” They changed the opening line, “Wake up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy,” to “Wake up in the morning like fuck P. Diddy,” in recognition of the producer’s alleged abuse.

Grimes is frustrated by the first weekend’s mishaps
A clip of Grimes’ wild, uninhibited screaming on the Coachella stage garnered more than 4 million views on TikTok. Grimes often screams during performances, but the screams in her Coachella set were born out of frustration after a technical setback that marred much of her performance. Grimes went to X to explain himself and promised concertgoers a better experience the second weekend.

No Doubt reunites and brings Olivia Rodrigo as a special guest
For the first time in 10 years, No Doubt reunited to perform in front of a Coachella crowd. To mark the occasion, Gwen Stefani welcomed Olivia Rodrigo to the stage to sing “Bathwater.” Rodrigo wore an “I heart ND” tank top, an ode to her love for the band and its frontwoman, who she has considered an inspiration in the past.

Doja Cat makes history
Doja Cat became the first female rapper to headline Coachella, opening her first performance in head-to-toe long blonde extensions. In its second weekend, a clip of her looking expectantly around for a dancer to hand her a microphone during a performance of “Fuck the Girls” racked up millions of views on X and TikTok.

Taylor Swift celebrates with Travis Kelce
Taylor Swift attended the first weekend of Coachella with her boyfriend Travis Kelce ahead of the release of her double album. The Tortured Poets Section: The Anthologyon April 19th. She was seen watching collaborator Jack Antonoff’s performance with his band Bleachers and taking photos Real Housewives“ Teresa Giudice, being lifted into the air by Kelce and generally having a great time.

Kid Cudi breaks his foot
On the final day of Coachella, during a set added to the schedule less than a week earlier, rapper Kid Cudi optimistically jumped off the stage and was unable to continue his show after hitting the floor. It turned out that he had broken his foot in the fall. In a video posted to X, Cudi said, “I learned a valuable lesson to stop dancing around.” [or] jumping off stages.”
