The Best Goalkeepers on the Transfer Market This Summer

Goalkeepers are an increasingly valuable commodity in modern football and top clubs around the world will be on the lookout for a new number one in the summer of 2024 transfer Window.

Goalkeepers like Alisson and Ederson have been recent breakthrough signings for Liverpool and Manchester City, and rival teams know they are the gold standard when it comes to number one positions across the continent.

So who are the best goalkeepers on the market this summer?

Koen Casteels has been an understated performer in the Bundesliga for Wolfsburg since 2015 and has already confirmed that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

The 31-year-old has eight caps for Belgium, including four in 2023, and the team that signs him this summer will be bringing in a reliable player.

Bayern Munich usually compete for smart signings like this and he would be an upgrade to current deputy Sven Ulreich if Bayern were to pursue a deal.

Rangers have been rewarded for their pursuit of Jack Butland, whose playing time fell dramatically after he left Stoke City for Crystal Palace. He even moved to Manchester United on loan for six months, but never made an appearance and was on the bench 20 times.

However, he was an enthusiastic signing for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership. Butland was nominated for the PFA Scotland Player of the Year award and his form sparked rumors of a return to the England national team.

He could move this summer if a Premier League club comes calling. At 31, Butland is in his prime as a goalkeeper and is looking to add to his surprisingly low tally of 87 appearances in England’s top flight.

Kevin Kelleher, Conor Gallagher

Caoimhin Kelleher may have enjoyed first-team football too much to return to the substitutes’ bench at Liverpool next season.

The Republic of Ireland international was constantly in action during Alisson’s injury layoff and received high praise from coach Jurgen Klopp, who singled out Kelleher for keeping the Reds’ season alive.

Liverpool could demand a reasonably lucrative price for the 25-year-old, so any interested suitor will need a pretty big chunk of cash as an offer.

Kepa Arrizabalaga

Kepa Arrizabalaga, still the most expensive goalkeeper of all time after his £72million move from Athletic Club to Chelsea, must have thought he was on the right track when he joined Real Madrid on loan in August following Courtois’ long-term injury .

Despite having made 19 appearances in all competitions so far, Kepa lost his starting place to Lunin after some erratic displays and Los Blancos are not interested in extending the Spaniard’s stay at the Bernabeu.

He is likely to return to Chelsea in the summer and it is a mystery where he will go from that point on.

Andriy Lunin

Andriy Lunin is another goalkeeper who doesn’t want to be on the bench in 2023/24.

The Ukrainian began the season behind Thibaut Courtois and Kepa Arrizabalaga in the pecking order at Real Madrid, but the Belgian’s injury and the Spaniard’s worrying performances helped Lunin move into Carlo Ancelotti’s starting XI.

Man Utd, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have all been tentatively touted as possible destinations for the 25-year-old.

Bento

The Brazilian, best known as Bento, caused a stir in Europe when he featured in the Selecao’s international friendlies against England and Spain in March, making some particularly eye-catching saves at Wembley Stadium.

He took his chance when both Alisson and Ederson were injured and – surprise, Chelsea have been watching him closely, as have Inter, Benfica, Nottingham Forest and Wolves.

Athletico Paranaense will demand a hefty transfer fee for their Brazil international after rejecting a £12.5million offer from an unnamed club in January.

Aaron Ramsdale

Aaron Ramsdale is still young for a goalkeeper, but there is no doubt he would have been itching to see David Raya take his place as Arsenal goalkeeper this season.

A campaign of relative inactivity has dashed Ramsdale’s hopes of becoming number one for England at Euro 2024 and he may have to leave the Emirates Stadium if he wants to force his way back into Gareth Southgate’s thinking.

Newcastle, who already have an English goalkeeper in Nick Pope, are known to be following the former Sheffield United and Bournemouth star.

Jordan Pickford

Jordan Pickford has been a permanent goalkeeper for Everton since his move to Goodison Park. He has experienced top football on the international stage with England but has not played for his club in Europe since 2017/18.

The former Sunderland international boasts a show of success in the Champions League if a rival club comes calling, even with three years left on his contract with Everton.

Some rumors suggest the Merseyside club could be forced to sell the Three Lions star if a planned takeover by 777 Partners falls through. Definitely something to keep an eye on.

Mike Maignan

Mike Maignan and AC Milan are a pretty solid match, with the Frenchman’s performances at the San Siro helping him replace Hugo Lloris as the national team’s starting goalkeeper.

The 28-year-old is often talked about as a target for Chelsea and the rumors won’t go away as his contract expires in 2026.

He may well sign a contract extension in Italy, but as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Maignan will never be too far away from being linked with a move.
