The chair of the Tortured Poets Section has spoken and she drops lyrical clues.
Taylor Swift took to Instagram on Sunday, April 14, to promote Target’s Phantom Clear Vinyl edition of her The Tortured Poets Department album and commented on a cryptic quote.
“I wish I didn’t remember when we had almost everything,” Swift, 34, wrote, presumably quoting lyrics from the record.
While Swift didn’t reveal the meaning of the quote or its origin, social media fans desperately tried to find an explanation.
“Taylor’s new album broke me before it even came out,” one fan wrote on X on Sunday, alongside Swift’s original line.
Another added: “I just woke up SO hungover and the first thing I see is ‘I wish I couldn’t remember how much we had almost everything.’ THIS IS JUST GREAT.”
Others pointed out that the line was “so damn sad” and that the LP would “destroy everyone.” Other fan theories suggest that Swift is likely referring to her previous relationship Joe Alwynwith whom she dated between 2016 and early 2023.
“If I catch you, Joe,” one social media user quipped, while others jokingly begged the 33-year-old actor to “pay for.” [their] Therapy” when the album is released.
Swift announced at the Grammys earlier this year that her eleventh studio album, The Tortured Poets Departmentwould be released on April 19th. The record she wrote once in 2022 midnight was completed, helped her get through what was supposed to be a difficult time.
“I had to do something [TTPD]. It’s really been a lifeline for me,” she said during a concert in Australia in February. “It kind of reminded me why songwriting is something that actually gets me through life, and I’ve never had an album where I needed songwriting more than this album Tortured Poets.”
While Swift didn’t further reveal her lyrical inspiration, her fans have theorized based on the song titles that the album is mostly about Alwyn and her breakup. The LP includes tracks titled “So Long, London” – Alwyn is British and the subject of Swift’s 2019 hit “London Boy” – as well as “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” and “Fresh Out the Slammer” .
Swift, who has since moved on with the NFL star Travis Kelcealso released several Apple Music playlists comparing her previous songs (especiallyTTPD) on the five stages of grief. Fans think the music summaries are also a reference TTPD be a breakup album.
The Tortured Poets Department will be released on Friday, April 19th.
