The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R was named the best-selling car in February 2024. At that time the sales figure was 19,412 units. However, there was a decline in sales in the following months. In March this year, 16,368 units were sold, which was only enough for third place on the list of best-selling cars.

Meanwhile, the Wagon R posted slightly better sales results in April this year, taking second place. Total sales in April 2024 were 17,850 units. Compared to the previous year, this meant a decline in sales of 15 percent. In April 2023, sales were 20,879 units.

How did Tata Punch overtake Maruti Suzuki Wagon R?

In the last few years, Tata Punch has managed to source over 2.8 lakh houses in the country. Well, this isn’t just a coincidence. Rather, it has a lot to do with what the Punch offers buyers in the budget segment. Below are the reasons behind Tata Punch’s success in India.

Robust build quality

Car buyers in India are now realizing that mileage isn’t everything. People are more and more inclined to buy cars with sturdier build quality that offers them peace of mind. And one of the main reasons for Punch’s success in India is its robust build quality.

In the adult safety rating, the Punch micro SUV scored 16.45 out of 17 points. The Punch received 40.89 out of 49 points for child safety. And based on these results, the Punch was subsequently rewarded with a perfect five-star safety rating by NCAP.

Multiple drive options

Aside from being safe, the Punch also manages to attract more buyers due to its diverse powertrain options. There is a Tata Punch for every type of buyer. Tata Motors offers the Punch with petrol, CNG and electric powertrains. The Punch petrol variant gets a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine. The CNG iteration also uses the same engine.

Stunning looks

Not only is the Punch well built and offers multiple engine options, but it is also a real eye-catcher visually. Its SUV style has made it a popular choice among buyers despite being offered in the budget segment.

Generally, people expect a hatchback in the price range, but the Tata Punch offers a robust SUV design that helps it attract more buyers. The micro SUV gets an aggressive front bumper, LED daytime running lights and a macho appearance. All of this contributes to success.

Packed with features

Another major reason for its success in India is the list of features it offers. The Tata Punch is loaded with features. The combustion engine-powered models come with a 7-inch touchscreen display with connected car technology, a 7-inch semi-digital instrument panel, automatic climate control and cruise control.

The Punch EV, which launched earlier this year, has an even more extensive list of features. The Punch EV offers premium features such as a 360-degree camera, electronic parking brake, touch-based HVAC controls, dual 10.25-inch screens, ventilated seats and a multi-function steering wheel.

Ground clearance and competitive prices

Since the Tata Punch is a subcompact SUV and not a hatchback, it has good ground clearance. The Punch has a ground clearance of 187 mm. Compared to vehicles (hatchbacks) in this price range, this is significantly better.

As far as pricing is concerned, the Punch has been priced extremely competitively by Tata Motors. The punch starts at Rs. 6 lakh and goes up to Rs. 10.20 lakh for the ICE model. Meanwhile, the Punch EV starts at Rs. 10.99 lakh and goes up to Rs. 15.49 lakh.
