The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday (April 30) announced the Indian squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup. The tournament is scheduled to be held in June this year in the United States of America (USA) and the Caribbean.
Rohit Sharma will captain the Indian team in the T20 World Cup 2024 while Hardik Pandya has been named his deputy for the tournament. Yuzvendra Chahal has returned to the team after an impressive IPL 2024. Rinku Singh, on the other hand, has been dropped and will be part of the reserves.
Rinku Singh has been one of the most consistent batters for India in T20Is for a year now. The batsman has hardly put a foot wrong in his career but in his place, BCCI offered Shivam Dube, who has been in top form in the ongoing IPL 2024.
Apart from Rinku Singh, KL Rahul was dropped from the team. The goalkeeper-batsman was no longer part of the squad after the 2022 T20 World Cup. However, his recent form in the IPL has impressed many and there have even been early signs that he could make the team of the tournament.
Rishabh Pant will return in Indian colors for the first time since December 2022. He was selected as the goalkeeper-batsman in the team along with Sanju Samson as the second goalkeeper. The Rajasthan Royals captain has been outstanding with the bat in the ongoing Indian Premier League.
Apart from Hardik and Shivam, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel are the two all-rounders in the team. They will also handle the spin bowling duties along with Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, who are two leg-spinners. Ravi Bishnoi also failed to break into the team.
India have selected only three pacers in the team – Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj. The trio will be crucial for the team in the tournament as many would-be players are depending on them in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
In addition to the main squad, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has also named four reserve players in the team. Shubman Gill, Khaleel Ahmed, Avesh Khan and Rinku Singh will travel with the team on standby.
