Shekhar Suman Reveals How Angry Villagers Attacked Shashi Kapoor When Her Car Hit a Man

Bollywood actor Shekhar Suman, who was last seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s web series, Constitution: The Diamond Bazaar, has attracted a lot of attention. The 61-year-old made his debut in the Indian film industry in 1984 and has worked on a handful of projects since then. Recently, Shekhar took a trip down memory lane and recalled an incident when he was shooting his debut film.

Shekhar Suman recalls an incident where villagers grabbed Shashi Kapoor by his collar

Shekhar Suman starred alongside Bollywood greats Shashi Kapoor, Rekha and Amjad Khan in the 1984 film: Utsav. The actor narrated an incident involving himself, Anuradha Patel, Shashi Kapoor and his son Kunal Kapoor. He recalled during an interaction on Honestly Podcast that their car had hit a man while they were driving to Bangalore to catch a flight. Sharing more details about the incident, Shekhar said:

“Shashi Kapoor and Anuradha Patel, who played my wife, and me and his son Kunal Kapoor, were returning from Bangalore to catch a flight. We were in the car, an ambassador, and we hit a man on the street. He flew off and then the villagers came and started beating us all.”

Shekhar Suman further added that the angry villagers grabbed Shashi Kapoor by the collar and even beat up the actor’s son Kunal. He said that the villagers even threatened to behead Mr. Rajesh. Meanwhile, the person who was hit by their car was sitting under a tree sipping tea. Shekhar Suman termed this incident as “scary” and said:

“They broke the windshield; They grabbed Shashi Kapoor by his collar and started beating Kunal Kapoor. There was this actor who is no more, Mr. Rajesh, they grabbed him by his hair and said, “We will behead you.” The man who was actually hit was sitting under a tree, drinking tea and smiling. I don’t know what he was mumbling in his native language, but it was so scary.”

When Shekhar Suman thanked Rekha and Shashi Kapoor for his big break in the industry

Earlier, during his conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Shekhar Suman recalled the time when he was shooting Utsav with the then reigning queen of Bollywood, Rekha. He said that he will forever be grateful to the legendary actress for saying yes to working with a newcomer when she could have easily said no. Shekhar further said that he is grateful to Shashi Kapoor and Girish Karnad for giving him a big break in the industry.

Shekhar Suman praised Rekha’s professionalism

Furthermore, Shekhar praised Rekha and mentioned that he has never seen an actress as professional as her. He recalled that on the first day of filming, there was a massive tax raid at Rekha’s house. Shekhar went on to say that every actor would have packed their bags and left but she remained focused on her job. In his words:

“It’s a professional actress who felt very comfortable.” I remember she had a massive tax raid on the first day of filming. Any other actor would have packed his bags and left. She said, ‘Let them do their job, I’ll stay back and do mine.'”
