Shekhar Suman, who portrays Nawab Zulfikar in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Netflix series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, recently shared glimpses of a memorable scene from the first episode of the series. The scene features an unusual rendition of Bhansali that left a lasting impression.
Shekhar Suman recalls Sanjay Leela Bhansali Bhansali’s ‘bizarre’ reshoot of intimate scene from Heeramandi: ‘Done by no actor or director’
Shekhar, speaking on Zoom, discussed how SLB dramatically changed the originally planned scene during filming. He explained: “Normally, like any other actor, I prepared my lines completely based on what was given to me through my own interpretation. As the scene was about to begin, he called me and said, ‘I’ve thought of something bizarre.’ interpretation of it. Are you open to that? I said yes and he completely turned it around and it was something no one had thought of.”
Shekhar further added, “He (Sanjay Leela Bhansali) probably thought out of the blue that this was a thing done to death. “Let me do it like that. So it’s about this Nawab who is angry and drunk and pees from a carriage pulled by Mallikajaan. And he’s trying to deal with her in his drunken state.”
Suman elaborated, “He (Sanjay Leela Bhansali) said, ‘No, turn around. And then he (Nawab Zulfikar) performs fellatio, a kind of oral sex in mid-air, and thinks that Mallikajaan is sitting on it.’ And he (Nawab Zulfikar) is convinced because he is Nawab and he turned around, “What are you doing here?” He says, “No. I know what I’m doing and I know you’re here.” So that was a very strange interpretation, and no actor or director has ever done that before, of someone having sex in mid-air.”
Shekhar continued, “I did. Like I said, I did it on instinct and he came running up and said, “Great, great.” So that was it. Then it was time to pack up and all the technicians came running and said: “Thank you very much.” Otherwise this scene would have continued because of his manner. He is an advocate. If no other actor had caught the surah, it would have been another 6 hours, 7-8 hours. But it just happens so right because I know that the person standing in front of me, what they explained to me and what I took in as a result is going to be spot on.”
