Shah Rukh Khan, the undisputed king of Bollywood, wears many hats. Beyond the glitz and glamor of the silver screen, he is a passionate cricket enthusiast and the owner of the successful IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). In a recent interview with Star Sports, Khan revealed that for him, the most rewarding aspect of the IPL is not just winning trophies but also the platform it provides to young Indian cricketers.
Shah Rukh Khan says IPL goes beyond winning; The top priority is to give young cricketers the opportunity to play: “At least 250-300 children will get this opportunity”
The IPL, launched in 2008, revolutionized sports in India. Khan, recognizing this potential, jumped on board and established KKR as a major force in the league. But beyond the team’s success, he remains focused on the bigger picture: supporting young talent.
“Someone had once told me that there was a time in our country when out of 100 million people, only 11 men got the opportunity to play cricket,” Khan said, highlighting the crucial role the league played in nurturing raw talent In IPL, at least 250-300 children get this opportunity, including girls. In our team there are players like Rinku (Singh), Sanju Samson, Mohammed Shami and so many others,” he added.

Khan’s philosophy with KKR reflects this vision. The franchise is known for its focus on young players. Over the years, KKR has unearthed gems like Pat Cummins, Sunil Narine and Shreyas Iyer, who not only helped the team win but also became household names in Indian cricket. Shah Rukh Khan said that the “highest point” of the IPL is to give a chance to the youngest players. “Maybe when I say ‘opportunity’ you give yourself too much importance, but when given a chance they become what they are meant to be,” he said.
However, Khan stressed that the IPL is not just about creating stars. It’s about fostering a love of the game, a sense of camaraderie and a competitive spirit. The interview was aired on the day Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Mumbai Indians at the Wakhede Stadium in Mumbai on Friday after 12 years.
