Sanjay Leela Bhansali attends the Heeramandi screening in Los Angeles: “This story has taken the longest – 18 years of nurturing, cherishing and living it.”

The evening began with an opening statement from Bela Bajaria, Chief Content Officer of Netflix. This was followed by the eagerly awaited screening of the first episode of the series. At the end of the evening, comedian and talk show host Lilly Singh hosted a lively question and answer session with Bhansali, giving the audience the opportunity to delve deeper into the world of Heeramandi.

In conversation with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Lilly Singh shared her admiration for the upcoming series and how fascinated she was after watching the two episodes of the series. She said: “On behalf of the entire audience here I can say it was spectacular and visually stunning.”

Reflecting on the journey of the project, Bhansali revealed, “The script for The Constitution was enchanting, huge and epic. The story was too long for a film and I had the concept 18 years ago but there were no OTT platforms back then. I finally saw an opportunity to do it properly on an OTT platform where you can develop it and enjoy every character. This story has taken the longest – 18 years of nurturing, cherishing and living it.”

Bhansali continued: “Working with Netflix on my first series was a completely different experience. In 30 years of my career, I have never met producers as beautiful as her. They are harsh and relentless and require honest directors to create content with the same passion. As a filmmaker, it is good karma to meet such producers and I am grateful to them.”

The event’s guest list reflected the excitement surrounding the series. Some of the notable participants included entertainment personalities like actor Rushi Kota, comedian Punam Patel, director Nisha Ganatra, actress Joya Kazi, singer Tesher and producer Radhi Devlukia-Shetty, among others.

Constitution: The Diamond Bazaar promises to be a visually stunning and emotionally charged drama. Set against the backdrop of India’s independence movement during the British Raj, the series explores the lives of courtesans, known as tawaifs, who live in the red-light district of Heera Mandi in Lahore.
