What you need to know
- Samsung is reportedly starting development on its Wear OS 5 version as a new test version has been discovered.
- The firmware is listed for the Galaxy Watch 6 series in the USA
- The timing is right as Samsung originally wanted to start testing Wear OS 4 in May 2023, but there was a delay that pushed the test to June.
It appears that Samsung has started developing its Wear OS 5 software for its range of suitable smartwatches.
The alleged test firmware was spotted by Matthew Reiter on X, which could indicate Samsung is starting to test Wear OS 5 software (via SamMobile). The software with the version number R965USQU1BXD8, was discovered a few days ago in development of the Galaxy Watch 6 series.
In addition, the software apparently only affects the carrier-locked version of the smartwatch in the USA
While more detailed information about the software is not yet known, Google is expected to talk about the update during I/O 2024.

Google is preparing for its annual I/O event, scheduled for May 14 this year. We’re expecting some revelations and insights from the company, including Wear OS 5, as the company announced its tentative developer meeting schedule last month. The session is intended to include a first look at the software, as the description reads: “Building for the future of Wear OS.”
That’s good news for wearables, as Google appears to be maintaining an annual release cadence for major Wear OS software updates.
Samsung’s apparent evolution of the Wear OS 5 (probably One UI 6 Watch) skin that may now appear makes sense. Last year, the company originally planned to launch the Wear OS 4 beta in May, but faced a delay. Testing only started in June, so there’s a chance Samsung isn’t trying to repeat last year’s ugly problems.
More importantly, rumors suggest the software could launch in time for the Galaxy Watch 7 series, likely later this summer. There have been several sightings of an “unreleased Android 14 build” that could hint at the upcoming Wear OS software. Additionally, Samsung will likely get a head start on ensuring that the new watch equipped with the Exynos 5535 can properly support the firmware.
If it ain’t broken…
The Galaxy Watch 6 continues a trend that Samsung has become known for with its wearables. The device has a slight increase in performance compared to last year, but has a larger and brighter display. The Galaxy Watch 6 even charges surprisingly quickly, making it the ideal companion to have on hand throughout the day.
