Russell Brand took a step in his Christian faith by experiencing a sacrament of initiation.
“Yesterday I was baptized and it was an incredible, profound experience,” Brand, 48, wrote via Instagram on Monday, April 29. “Many aspects of it were very intimate and personal. The truth is this. As someone who has taken many, many substances in the past and has always been disappointed by its inability to provide the kind of calm and peace and even transcendence that I was always looking for, something happened in the process Baptism that was unbelievable, overwhelming.”
At the age of 20, the comedian struggled with heroin addiction. However, in a December 2023 TikTok video, Brand revealed that he has been sober for 21 years.
While Brand described his baptism as “a change in transition,” he admitted that life didn’t suddenly become perfect overnight.
“I already sensed annoyance,” he said. “I had three children. I found a job. I have challenges. I still live in the world. But I feel like a new resource has been activated within me.”
Brand and his wife, Laura GallacherThey have been married since 2017 and have two daughters, Mabel, 7, and Peggy, 5. They have not yet revealed the gender or name of their third child.
Although his children’s mother is Catholic, Brand said he decided to be baptized “for myself” but prays “that it will be meaningful for my family, especially my children.”
“I learn and will make mistakes, but this is my path now and I already feel incredibly blessed, relieved, nourished and held,” he continued. “It was an incredible experience.”
On Friday, April 26, Brand revealed to his social media followers for the first time that he was strengthening his Christian faith after a difficult year. “It was explained to me that it is an opportunity to die and be reborn,” he shared via Instagram while discussing his baptism. “An opportunity to leave the past behind and be born again in the name of Christ.”
In recent months, Brand has been accused of sexual assault by several women. In September 2023, The times released a report accusing Brand of rape, sexual assault and abuse. Brand, for his part, denied the claims and said his relationships were “absolutely, always consensual.”
Brand recently denied allegations of sexual assault by an extra on the set of his 2011 film Arthur. In February, he responded to the allegations by saying he didn’t recognize the woman’s name or photo and didn’t remember interacting with her.
As Brand tries to move forward in his faith journey, he said he is grateful for fans’ encouraging comments and understands the cynics who “just see me as a celebrity.”
