Rotherham United 5-2 Cardiff City: Jordan Hugill and Tom Eaves Score Twice Each as the Millers Exit the Championship in Style

Rotherham completed the Sky Bet Championship in style with a 5-2 win over Cardiff.

It was Steve Evans’ first win as manager of the already relegated Millers and both Jordan Hugill and Tom Eaves scored twice to secure only their fifth win of a torrid season.

Eaves had an early opening as the ball fell into the box but Nat Phillips got in his way.

Rotherham launched a quick attack in the 25th minute and took the lead.

It was Cameron Humphreys who started the move and his through ball to Cohen Bramall was perfect. The full-back was then able to put a cross on a plate for Hugill to put in the bottom corner.

Cardiff called Rotherham’s Dillon Phillips into action for the first time when Ollie Tanner’s pass hit Josh Bowler and he shot straight at the goalkeeper.

The visitors equalized in the 37th minute when Tanner’s curling free kick beat out Nat Phillips and he buried his header into the corner.

Cardiff were enjoying their best spell of the game and once again bowler Dillon Phillips hit the palms with a powerful strike.

Seb Revan then troubled Ethan Horvath in the Cardiff goal when he fired from distance but his shot went just wide.

Rotherham took the lead again in the second minute of injury time when Bramall again advanced down the left and passed back to Eaves, who turned the ball in.

Cardiff equalized in the 47th minute with the first attack of the second half, with Cian Ashford picking out Tanner who fired past Dillon Phillips.

Eaves then had two great chances to put the Millers back in front, with keeper Horvath keeping them both out.

Rotherham were awarded a penalty from the resulting corner, with Hakeem Odoffin brought down by David Turnbull in a scramble in the penalty area.

Eaves sent Horvath the wrong way and put Rotherham back in the lead in the 57th minute.

Cardiff substitute Raheem Conte shot into the side netting after a dangerous shot from the right flank.

Rotherham took a two-goal lead in the 64th minute when record signing Sam Nombe found space on the edge of the penalty area and slotted into the far corner.

Hugill scored his second goal to make it 5-2 in the 70th minute when he passed Horvath and Nat Phillips narrowly beat the goalkeeper with a back pass.

Both he and Eaves had a chance for a hat trick, but Hugill saw his shot bounce over the goal frame and the rebound was blocked to Eaves on the way to goal.

The final celebration of the game went to popular Rotherham goalkeeper Viktor Johansson, who came on as a substitute for what was likely to be his final appearance in a Millers jersey.
