Riddhima Kapoor Remembers Dad, Rishi’s Last Days and His Tragic Death: ‘We Were Trolled for Not Being Sad’

Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh married in 1980 and had two children, Ranbir Kapoor and Riddhima Kapoor Sahni. Unfortunately, Rishi Kapoor passed away in 2020 after a long battle with cancer. His tragic death was a great loss to the film industry, his fans and his family. Although the late actor appeared to have recovered from his cancer, the deadly disease returned stronger after initially resolving. In a recent interview, Rishi’s daughter Riddhima spoke about his last days.

In an interview with Galatta India, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni spoke about her father Rishi Kapoor and his tragic death. Talking about it, she shared that Rishi has a bubbly personality and it was difficult for her family to realize that he was actually very sick. Riddhima further recalled his final days and shared that Rishi was under medical supervision during the shooting of his last film. Sharmaji Namkeen. While his family wanted him to take it easy, the late actor continued to shoot across Delhi and even enjoyed street food. In her words:

“The only thing he wanted to do was be in front of the camera and make films. Even when he was in the hospital in New York, his only thought was, “Will I be able to work again?” We honestly didn’t want him to work at that point, we wanted him to rest. At that time, the pollution in Delhi…it was not a safe environment for him. He wouldn’t take no for an answer. He also ate street food.”

It was in 2018 when Rishi Kapoor flew to New York for his treatment. However, he returned to India the next year as he was feeling much better. Riddhima revealed that her father attended all the Diwali parties and was very excited. But the cancer returned aggressively and his condition worsened. Riddhima mentioned that it was the worst phase for her family and people trolled her for not seeming upset over Rishi Kapoor’s death. She said:

“It came back. It came back very quickly, it was very aggressive. We spent Diwali together and went out. He was very excited. He was so happy, attended all the Diwali parties, we spent Diwali together and next thing you know, in a few months, he’s back in the hospital. A lot of people said they didn’t look like they were very upset, but they didn’t know what we were going through back then.”


Riddhima recalls the heartbreaking moment of Rishi Kapoor’s death

Riddhima was in Delhi when Rishi Kapoor died. Therefore, due to the lockdown, she could not be with him in his final moments. The loving daughter had to get special permission to travel from Delhi to Mumbai by road, but she could only get it after her father performed her last rites. Recalling this, Riddhima shared,

“It was terrible. Because my brother and my mother told me the news on FaceTime. I call each other in the morning between 7:30 and 8:00 and tell myself that this happened.”

Recalling her last memory of her father, Riddhima Kapoor said that he had called her two days before his death but she had missed his call. However, she admitted that she still regrets it as her father couldn’t respond or talk to anyone after that because he was in the hospital. Riddhima also added that she took a screenshot of the call log as it was the last time he called her and said,

“He tried to call me two days before this happened. He gave me a missed call, I still have it on my phone. That was his last missed call to me and I thought… I wish I had picked it up. After that he couldn’t respond or speak properly because he was in the hospital and I still saved that missed call. I took a screenshot and saved it. Because that was the last time he called me to actually talk to me. I called him afterwards but he couldn’t talk.”
