PBKS vs CSK: Will Chennai Super Kings Miss Out on IPL 2024 Playoffs Spot? Deep Dasgupta Makes an Impressive Verdict

Former India wicketkeeper-batsman Deep Dasgupta shared his thoughts on four teams making it to the playoffs in the ongoing 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Deep Dasgupta stated that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) should not be overlooked despite their current position in the points table.

The race for the top four places has intensified among the teams in the current tournament. Rajasthan Royals (RR), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) occupy the top four positions in the table. Chennai Super Kings are fifth in the standings.

The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led team has won and lost five games each. The Chennai-based team has 10 points to their name and a Net Run Rate (NRR) of +0.627. Because the league expands to ten teams, franchises typically need at least 16 points to secure a spot in the top four after the league phase.

I won’t list them now – Deep Dasgupta

In a video shared by ESPNcricinfo on X (formerly known as Twitter), Deep Dasgupta was asked if RR, SRH, KKR and LSG will make it to the playoffs. Dasgupta suggested that the CSK team should not be overlooked given its experience.

“Is it safe to say that RR, SRH, KKR and LSG will be in the playoffs?” asks the moderator.

“Well, I don’t know. I mean, you asked that before the game too, right? And I feel like CSK with all that experience. Yeah, I mean, I’m not going to count them out now,” said Deep Dasgupta.

The Chennai Super Kings need to win at least three of their remaining four games to stay in the race for a playoff spot. If they win all four remaining league games, the defending champions will secure a place in the top four with 18 points at the end of the league phase of IPL 2024.

The Super Kings will need to improve their net run rate to secure a top four spot with multiple teams finishing with 16 points. They will finish the league stage with 14 points if CSK loses two of their remaining four games, reducing their chances of finishing in the top four to purely mathematical possibilities.

Chennai suffered a seven-wicket defeat against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their last game. Ruturaj Gaikwad was the Super Kings’ top scorer with 62 runs off 48 balls, including five fours and two sixes. Punjab chased the 163-run target with 13 balls remaining at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
