Distribution and production company Other Angle is hoping to spark interest in a remake of the upcoming French comedy That certain something with a performance at the fourth edition of his French Comedy Club in LA this weekend.
Actor and comedian Artus directs and co-stars with Clovis Cornillac as a father-son bank robber team who infiltrate a bus taking a group of disabled youth to a holiday camp to escape the police. The cast consists mainly of young people with various disabilities.
Olivier Albou, co-founder of Other Angle, suggests that the comedic plot, disabled cast and sensitive storytelling make a rare combination.
“Even though the pitch is not the same, the film has similarities with the Spanish film Champions (Champions), which sold very well both as the original film and as a remake,” he says, referring to Javier Fesser’s drama about a football club made up of disabled players.
Back in Europe, That certain something will be released in cinemas in France on May 1st and will be distributed there by Pan Distribution. It was also sold to French-speaking territories, Benelux (Vertigo), Switzerland (Praesens) and Canada (AZ Films).
Albou and Laurence Schonberg, co-heads of the Paris and LA-based distribution and production house, founded the French Comedy Club in 2022. The aim is to showcase French comedies that are ripe for spin-off or remake deals.
The event traditionally takes place in the spring, but last fall there was an additional edition in response to the cancellation of the American French Film Festival (ex-Colcoa) due to the Hollywood strikes.
Apart from That certain somethingThis year’s program, which runs April 27 and 28 at the Lumiere Cinema in Beverly Hills, is also included Open session by Newen Connect, Retirement home 2 by Ginger and Fed and Happy winners from charades.
“Other Angle” will also be represented at Cannes this year with new films as well as older films with remake potential.
It is one of five companies selected to present projects at the inaugural edition of the Cannes Marché du Film’s Cannes Remakes initiative, which aims to promote remakes of European feature films.
