EXCLUSIVE: After successful start of the extraction Over at Netflix, director Hargrave has his eye on another potential franchise with an intellectual property revving its engines to hit the market. Sources report that Deadline, Skydance and Mattel Films have inked a deal with Hargrave to direct a live-action film based on it MatchboxMattel’s iconic real-world die-cast toy vehicle range, with David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper writing the script.
Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger will produce alongside Robbie Brenner for Mattel Films. The project is directed by Aimee Rivera for Skydance and Elizabeth Bassin and Andrew Scannell for Mattel Films.
The iconic Matchbox brand was invented in 1953 by automobile enthusiast Jack Odell to solve a challenge for his daughter, who was only allowed to take a toy to school if it was small enough to fit in a matchbox. When his daughter’s school friends clamored for a “matchbox car,” an iconic brand was born. The high standards of authenticity for Matchbox die-cast cars have driven the brand for over 70 years and generations of fans. Today, two Matchbox cars are sold worldwide every second.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but given Hargrave’s style that has made him one of the city’s best action directors, the film is sure to feature some high-octave sequences to rival any city chase scene.
Hargrave has established himself as a major filmmaker known for deftly incorporating a mix of unique, visceral and character-driven action into both his film and television work. After the success of Extraction 1 And 2, Hargrave has begun building a robust development slate that includes Warner Bros.’ high-octane action film. Stay frostywhich he will also produce with Dark Horse Entertainment, about a man who miraculously survives an assassin’s bullet in the head and must figure out who wants him dead and why, while returning home in time to spend Christmas with him spend son.
Hargrave will also direct the pilot episode and executive produce the upcoming Apple TV+ original drama series. The final frontier, with Jason Clarke. It was the most streamed film on the platform after being sold to Apple and Skydance in a competitive situation. Also his script The liberation (fka Demon House) has just been completed for Netflix, directed by Lee Daniels. He has also been writing for the last two years Thunder cats for Warner Bros. and the orphan prequel, Orphan: First kill for Paramount.
Tropper is the internationally best-selling author of six novels that have been translated into over thirty languages. He adapted his New York Times bestseller I’ll leave you here as a Warner Bros. film directed by Shawn Levy and starring Jason Bateman and Tina Fey.
He was the creator and executive producer of the Cinemax television series banshee and the HBO Max drama warriorand served as showrunner and executive producer of the Apple TV+ science fiction series See, with Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard.
On the features page he wrote Kodachromewith Ed Harris, Jason Sudeikis and Elizabeth Olsen, and The Adam Project, a sci-fi thriller starring Ryan Reynolds and directed by Shawn Levy. Most recently he wrote the Amazon/MGM original feature The Wrecking Crewstarring Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista, which begins production in August this year, and he is the creator of the television drama Your friends and neighbors for Apple TV+ starring Jon Hamm, currently in production in New York City and scheduled to air in early 2025.
