Zac Popik/Lionsgate (2)Martin Freeman he finally addressed the overwhelming backlash Miller’s girl sex scene with Jenna Ortega – who is 30 years younger than him – by sticking to the plot.
Freeman, 52, described the film as “mature and nuanced,” he told the British magazine The times on Saturday, April 27: “It’s not, ‘Isn’t this great?'”
While I reject the negative feedback Miller’s girl “It’s a disgrace,” Freeman said, questioning the response to films that deal with challenging themes.

Miller’s girl, released in January, featured a student-teacher romance between Ortega, 21, and Freeman’s characters. Before the film’s debut, viewers were wondering how Miller’s girl could romanticize a relationship between an underage girl and a man in his 50s. The film continued to face backlash as clips went viral on social media showing a sexual moment between the characters.
Intimacy Coordinator Kristina Arjona defended the scene, telling the Daily Mail that same month: “There [were] Many, many people get involved during this process [Jenna] to make sure it was consistent with what she was comfortable with and she was very determined and very sure about what she wanted to do.”
Arjona claimed that Ortega participated in discussions about NSFW scenes.
“One of my tasks is to support them in their decisions. I adapt to the comfort level of my actors, especially in a production like this where there is a big age difference between the actors,” she continued. “I am very aware of both of my talents and ensure that we constantly ask and never exceed their limits. And again, make sure, especially with someone significantly younger, that they provide ongoing consent.”
After the controversy deadline reported that SAG-AFTRA has updated its guidelines for the use of intimacy coordinators. The actors’ guild explicitly implemented stricter confidentiality rules in February, meaning any intimacy coordinator who didn’t adhere to required standards could be removed from the SAG-AFTRA registry.

“Intimacy coordinators are a critical resource on every set to ensure the protection of our members while working in intimate scenes,” a SAG-AFTRA spokesperson said in a February statement. “Intimacy coordinators should maintain the confidentiality of an actor’s work and experience when performing highly sensitive scenes unless they have the actor’s permission to share this information publicly.”
The statement continued: “Publicly releasing details of an actor’s set work or confidential information entrusted to the Intimacy Coordinator without the performer’s consent is unacceptable.”
The new restrictions said an intimacy coordinator can speak about filmed film or television scenes if law enforcement is involved or there is express permission from the actors and production. Deadline noted that Lionsgate and Ortega had no comment on how the recent controversy unfolded Miller’s girl allegedly played a role in SAG-AFTRA’s increased confidentiality measures.
