Margot Robbie Has a Monopoly Movie in the Works

Margot Robbie is doubling (and tripling) its efforts to adapt popular games and toys into films.

It was announced at CinemaCon on Wednesday that the 33-year-old actress would be producing a film version of Monopoly through her production company LuckyChap alongside Hasbro, maker of the real estate board game.

The multiplayer game, in which competitors vie to gain the largest share of ownership and bankrupt their competitors, is one of the most prolific of its kind, with roots dating back to 1903. In its 100-year history, Monopoly has inspired television and movie-themed editions, an interactive McDonald’s game, and several apps for addicted players.

According to Lionsgate, the studio behind the film, the game has sold more than half a billion copies since 1935, studio executives said at CinemaCon diversity. The film is made possible by Lionsgate Purchase from eOne entertainment company in December, which gave them production rights to the Monopoly brand.

It is currently unclear whether Robbie – who runs LuckyChap with her husband Tom Ackerley and partners Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr – has found a director or writers for the Monopoly film. Accordingly diversityHowever, Adam Fogelson, chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, told viewers at the film-centric event in Las Vegas that LuckyChap has “a clear stand” when it comes to the story and direction of their Monopoly Movie.

Just last month it was revealed that Robbie was also up for it Bring The Sims to the big screen. This project is a collaboration between LuckyChap, Vertigo Entertainment and Electronic Arts, who published the original game.

The film is directed by Loki Director Kate Herron, who is also set to write the screenplay alongside Briony Redman, an actress and author who previously wrote for the long-running British drama, Doctor Who.

It seems studios are lining up to work with LuckyChap, who also produced Me, Tonya and Emerald Fennells salt burn – after BarbieRobbie’s collaboration with writer-director Greta Gerwig grossed $1.4 billion at the box office and received nine Oscar nominations.

In January, ET spoke with Robbie and asked what’s next for the actress and producer after making history with the film. She teased this all the while BarbieSince the press run has come to an end, they may be willing to give the film the musical treatment with a Broadway show or a movie musical version.
