Mapping Pro-Palestinian Campus Protests Around the World

Pro-Palestinian demonstrations and sit-ins are increasing at universities across the United States and on several campuses around the world.

Columbia University in New York, one of the most prestigious universities in the United States, has become a center for student activism since Israel’s war on Gaza began more than six months ago, with protests both for and against the war.

On April 19, more than 100 protesters were arrested on campus as police cleared an encampment set up by students.

On April 22, Columbia administrators announced that classes would be held in hybrid mode through the end of the spring semester.

What are the demonstrators demanding?

Columbia’s pro-Palestinian students and faculty members are demanding that their university divest from companies that profit from Israel’s war on Gaza, which has now killed more than 34,400 people and injured at least 77,500.

Where were students and teachers arrested?

At least 900 students and faculty have been arrested in the United States in the past 10 days as protesters continue to demand a ceasefire in Gaza and the divestment of investments by companies that enable Israel’s nearly seven-month war on Gaza. Protests have become more violent as law enforcement has attempted to clear students and faculty from encampments and protest sites.

Several students were suspended, placed on probation and, in rare cases, expelled from their universities.

Momodou Taal was among four students at Cornell University in upstate New York who were “temporarily suspended” on Saturday for setting up an encampment on campus.

He told Al Jazeera that the protesting students had received threats and were subjected to doxxing, the publication of their personal information online without their consent. He said such students received no protection from their institutions.

Some universities had to cancel graduation ceremonies, while others saw their buildings, courtyards and courtyards occupied by protesters and, in some cases, encampments.
