Manisha Koirala’s return to the big screen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s highly anticipated Netflix series ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’ marks a significant milestone in her career. Koirala played the role of Mallikajaan, the courtesan revered in 1940s Lahore, and was overwhelmed on her first encounter with the show’s extravagant sets.

Speaking to DNA, Koirala narrated the moment and said, “I asked Sanjay to see the set because I wanted to immerse myself in Mallikajaan’s world. When I first saw the set I was surprised. I got so nervous because I realized I was going to be there.”
Despite her nervousness, Koirala’s commitment to her character remained unwavering. She avoided influences from previous portrayals of courtesans in Indian cinema and tried to bring a new perspective to Mallikajaan. “If I want to create something that hasn’t been done before, I have to create that separation,” she explained. Koirala drew on her instincts and personal experiences, lending authenticity to her performance. She added: “You take some events from your life and place them in scenes where you feel like they make sense.”
Heeramandi, touted as Bhansali’s magnum opus and one of India’s most expensive web series, features a stellar ensemble cast including Richa Chadha, Sonakshi Sinha and Aditi Rao Hydari. Koirala’s reunion with Bhansali after 28 years of their collaboration Khamoshi: The Musical, adds to the anticipation of the project. Premiering on Netflix on May 1, Heeramandi promises a captivating narrative set against the backdrop of Indian history and culture.
