Sales figures for April were recently published. According to these numbers, the Mahindra Thar has outperformed the Jimny 24 times. Yes, you heard that right. It didn’t sell twice or three times, but 24 times. Total sales for Thar stood at 6,160 units.
Mahindra Thar: Sales Analysis for April
As mentioned above, Mahindra Automotive managed to deliver a total of 6,160 units of the Thar in April this year. In the same month last year, sales were 5,302 units. This corresponds to annual sales growth of 16 percent.
Meanwhile, Thar posted a modest month-on-month growth of 2 percent, with sales at 6,049 units in March. The overall sales growth of Thar seems to be very good considering that the model has been in the market since August 15, 2020.
Maruti Suzuki Jimny: Sales Analysis for April
As far as the sales analysis of the Maruti Suzuki Jimny is concerned, the month of April was a very bad month for the SUV. Maruti Suzuki only managed to record a sales tally of 257 units in April. There is no indication of year-on-year growth or decline as the model was launched back in June 2023.
Compared to the previous month, the Jimny suffered a 19 percent decline in sales. In the month of March, total sales of the Jimny were 318 units. Sales of the Jimny have been declining in recent months and the car is struggling to find buyers.
Why Mahindra Thar outperforms Maruti Jimny?
Since its launch, the Jimny has suffered from weak sales figures. On the other hand, Thar saw an increase in sales. Now you may be wondering why that is. Below you will find the answers to your question.
Multiple drive options
One of the main reasons for Thar’s success in India is that it offers both petrol and diesel engines. The Jimny, on the other hand, is only available with a single petrol engine.
Additionally, the Thar is offered in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options. The Jimny, on the other hand, only comes with four-wheel drive as standard, which not everyone may need.
Lower base price of Thar
In the price-conscious Indian market, every cent counts. And for this reason, Thar once again sells better than the Jimny. The 2WD variant of the Mahindra Thar starts at Rs 10.55 lakh. Meanwhile, the 4X4 variants start at Rs 13.87 lakh.
The Jimny, on the other hand, costs Rs 12.74 lakh without discounts. Additionally, the top-end variant costs Rs 15.05 lakh. So, due to this lower base price, the Thar is attracting a lot more buyers in the country.
Thar offers more performance
Another main reason why Thar is the more popular of the two. It is equipped with more powerful engines. The 2.0 liter turbo petrol engine produces 150 hp and 320 Nm of torque. The 1.5-liter turbodiesel in the basic version produces 119 hp and 300 Nm of torque.
Additionally, its 2.2-liter diesel engine produces 130 hp and 300 Nm of torque. The Maruti Suzuki Jimny, on the other hand, comes with a 1.5-litre petrol engine that produces 105 bhp and 134 Nm of torque.
Hardtop and softtop options
This does not seem to be a very important reason for the Thar’s success. However, it is certainly an added advantage of the Thar. Mahindra offers this lifestyle off-roader with either a hardtop or softtop. However, Maruti Suzuki only offers the Jimny with a hardtop.

As if the Mahindra Thar wasn’t already popular enough. The Thar will soon be offered in a 5-door version. Most likely it will be called Armada and will be launched in August this year. The company has made the Thar more practical by adding two doors in the middle.
It will now be a proper five-seater SUV and will be equipped with a lot of features. Features include ADAS, a single-pane power moonroof, roof-mounted speakers, a metal roof, a larger 10.25-inch instrument cluster and more.
