Luke Newton is all for taking words of wisdom from him Bridgerton Co-stars. When ET’s Cassie DiLaura visited the set of the hit Netflix series, she chatted with the actor behind Colin Bridgerton, whose Relationship with Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) will be the focus season 3.
The first two seasons of the series followed the love stories of Colin’s sibling Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) and Anthony (Jonathan Bailey), when they fell in love with Simon (Regé-Jean Page) and Kate (Simone Ashley), respectively. As the seasons hit, the actors behind the main characters became superstars, something Newton admitted is “hard to think about.”
“I think I have such tunnel vision within the show at the moment. I couldn’t see anything outside of it,” Newton told ET, before sharing that he sought advice from the previous leads.
“I recently checked with Regé and I talk to Johnny all the time. It’s like I’m passing on the knowledge of what it’s like to be kind of the host of the show,” he said. “It’s just incredible to see what everyone on that show did right after and the success it had. It’s kind of overwhelming and almost something I don’t want to think about.”
The story of the third season will follow a dramatic ending to the previous part if Penelope heard Colin He said he would never dream of courting her.
“That was a difficult scene to shoot… It was really strange to be so connected to this character and especially to the relationship and friendship of the last two years and then suddenly see this strange moment,” Newton said. “I had to really try to justify that and the way he felt. That’s what excited me at the beginning of season three, like how we would approach this… There’s a lot of conflict that we have to resolve before we even move forward.
At the start of season three, Newton said that “one of the really fun roles is balancing Penelope’s feelings for Colin and how he feels about her.”
“They have an incredible friendship,” he noted. “…I think we’re really diving in and exploring his role in helping her find her partner.”
This journey may not disappoint viewers the road they expectNewton teased.
“We’ve all been speculating for a whole year about what it’s going to be like next year… but no one could have guessed how this season would turn out… We’re really excited about it,” he said, before teasing whether or not Colin and Penelope are endgame.
“I think there are moments where fans will question that and maybe there will be a bit of a pinch and they might not want what they wanted before,” he said. “…It’s just so exciting.”
However, from his perspective, Newton said that he had to “support” Colin and Penelope as the perfect couple.
“I have to. I can’t want their stories to turn out differently than intended,” he said. “I’m such a fan of the show and a fan of that friendship and relationship.”
The ups and downs of the seasonNewton said will allow viewers to see a new side of Colin and Penelope.
“It’s about growth and progression in their relationship itself, but also about their own development, about how they’ve grown up a little over the summer, which we haven’t seen yet,” he said. “It was really exciting to come back and feel like there was a new side to Colin that I got to play. It wasn’t just the old Colin that I got to play for two years. It was great to come back and play a bit.” He has a rougher and more mysterious side, which is fun.
The first four episodes of season three will premiere on Netflix on May 16th. The final three episodes of the season will stream on June 13th.
