It’s not often that you get the opportunity to drive every single vehicle a car company makes, but that’s exactly what I’m going to do. I’m on my way out Lucid’s headquarters in Silicon Valley, California, to test all the cars the young automaker is currently building. Admittedly, this won’t be particularly difficult. At the moment, Lucid only builds the Air sedanand I will take a seat all four equipment variantsout of the basic model Air Pure up to the quarter million dollar sapphire.
Before I get behind the wheel Clean air, On tour, Grand touring And sapphire, I want to know what you want to know about you. What is it about Lucid’s cast that keeps you up at night? Want to know how they compare to each other? How about which one is the best to drive? Which Air does it smell the best? What tastes best? Bestie, I’ll answer any question you ask.
Before we get into it, let’s go through a few basics of the Air series. At the “bottom” of the heap we find the air clear. It is powered by a single electric motor on the rear axle that produces a whopping 430 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. Despite being the cheapest, it accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and the range from the 88 kWh battery is between 394 and 410 miles, depending on wheel size. Prices start at $71,400 including destination.
From then on we have the Air Touring. This brings you to dual engines and all wheel drive with 620 horsepower and 885 lb-ft of torque at your disposal. That’s enough to reach 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, and with a larger 92 kWh battery you’ll get a range of 365 to 411 miles, depending on wheel size. Prices start at $79,400.
But I understand you, you need more. Well, Lucid agrees and here’s why the Air Grand Touring Exits. This car makes even more power from its dual engines: 819 horsepower and 885 lb-ft of torque. Damned. The Grand Touring it’s all about the big tour. That means it comes with a 112kWh battery, good for 516 miles with the right wheels. With that the work is done. Despite this high number, reaching 60 miles per hour only takes three seconds. Prices start at $111,400.
Finally we come to the top dog: the Air sapphire. This thing is an absolute rocket as it features three motors (two in the rear and one in the front) that pump out a staggering 1,234 hp and 1,430 lb-ft of torque. As a result, the sprint from 0 to 60 takes just 1.89 seconds and the top speed can reach 205 miles per hour. The claimed range is still pretty solid by any measure. According to Lucid, the Sapphire’s 118 kWh battery is good for a range of 427 miles. Prices start at $249,900.
