The Lexus ES sedan may not be as successful as the closely related Camry or even the RX SUV, but it still has a reserved place in the automaker’s future lineup. Now, new trademark filings suggest that the Lexus ES will receive new hybrid and all-electric powertrains. A future update could arrive sooner than expected and follow the example of the 2025 Toyota Camry.

Lexus has trademarked the names ES350h, ES350e and ES500e, indicating that they will replace the current ES250, ES350 and ES300h models in the mid-size model range.

For those unfamiliar with Lexus’ naming strategy, the abbreviation h at the end of each name is reserved for hybrid vehicles, the h+ for PHEVs, and the e for all-electric models. Therefore, the ES350h could share the self-charging AWD hybrid system with the RX350h, positioned above the existing front-drive-only ES300h.

On the other hand, the ES350e and ES500e are expected to feature fully electric powertrains. It is currently difficult to speculate on the electric powertrain options as Toyota and Lexus have not yet introduced fully electric models based on the TNGA-K architecture. Still, as AutoGuide reports, the ES500e will likely be the new flagship model in the lineup.
Lexus EV range teaser (December 2021)
Speculation about an all-electric Lexus ES began in December 2021, when an official teaser revealed a midsize sedan as part of the future electric vehicle lineup. While the press release didn’t reveal any information about the mysterious models behind the scenes, the sedan had the same profile as the existing ES, albeit with a redesigned face.
As seen in an enlarged photo from the Club Lexus Forum, the upcoming EV features slimmer LED headlights and a much cleaner front bumper design without the signature “spindle grille.” Even though this could be a first mockup for the presentation, it definitely gives us an idea of what to expect.
The sixth-generation Lexus ES was originally introduced in 2018 and received a mid-lifecycle update in 2021, followed by numerous but less extensive model year updates. Normally 2025 would be a good time to start a new generation. However, the earlier teaser suggests that a second facelift for the Lexus ES with the new hybrid and electric powertrains may be in development.
Lexus plans to offer an all-electric option on every one of its models by 2030, on its way to becoming an all-electric brand by 2035.
