Former Pakistan cricketer Wasim Akram spoke about Rohit Sharma’s future with Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. He believes that the Indian captain might leave the franchise after the current season of the league.
Mumbai Indians batsman Rohit Sharma is the most talked about player in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The pre-league opening batsman was removed as the team’s captain, which came as a surprise to many as he had led the team to five titles.
Mumbai Indians announced in a social media post that Rohit Sharma will not be the captain of the team and announced Hardik Pandya as the captain of the team. The all-rounder was transferred to the franchise after leading the Gujarat Titans in the league for two seasons.
The removal of Rohit Sharma in the way he was did not please many. Many fans and pundits criticized Mumbai Indians for the way they handled the senior opener. He also led the team to the playoffs with the weak bowling lineup.
There were even reports that Rohit Sharma would leave Mumbai Indians after IPL 2024. The reports added that he will take part in the IPL 2025 auction, which will be a mega auction.
Wasim Akram believes Rohit Sharma will leave Mumbai Indians and expressed his desire to see the opening batsman play for Kolkata Knight Riders. He believes it will be a great thing if Rohit plays under Gautam Gambhir and Shreyas Iyer. Speaking to Sportskeeda, he explained:
“I feel like he won’t be with Mumbai Indians next season. I would like to see him at KKR. Imagine him open there, Gauti as mentor, Iyer as captain. They will have a very strong batting power” on this wicket (Eden Gardens). He bats very well on every wicket, he is a great player.
In the ongoing IPL 2024, Rohit Sharma seemed to be in stunning form in the first half of the season. However, he struggled to get going in the final games of the tournament, scoring just 33 runs in the final five innings.

Wasim Akram also spoke about Kolkata Knight Riders’ dominance in IPL 2024. He believes that it is Gautam Gambhir’s franchise and it will always remain his franchise. He also claimed that they were on the right track. He added:
“This is Gautam’s KKR and it will always remain his side. KKR is currently on the right track.”
Kolkata Knight Riders are currently at the top of the table and are looking to be favorites to qualify for the playoffs. They have won 8 games in the tournament and only need one win to officially qualify for the playoffs. With the kind of cricket they have played in the league, they seem to be the favorites to win the title.
