John Oates Says Hall & Oates is Over: ‘I’ve Moved On’

It seems to be the end of the road for Hall & Oates. In a new interview John Oates confirms that the iconic duo has no plans to move forward musically together recent legal troubles and feuds.

“As far as I’m concerned, I’ve moved on,” Oates, 76, says Rolling Stone. “I feel like I’m redesigning my creative life.”

However, he didn’t rule out the possibility of being friends with 77-year-old Daryl Hall in the future.

“I’m always open to that,” he tells the outlet. “Daryl Hall is a great person.” He is one of the greatest songwriters of all time and without a doubt one of the greatest singers of all time. I would never say anything negative about him. But we have a different strategy for our lives, and we have a different strategy for our business lives as well as our personal lives. And that’s it, so be it. We are old people. We deserve to be able to do whatever we want.”

The comments reflect what he told ET back in December.

Oates previously opened up to ET about the couple’s 50-year legacy after being unmasked in the Season 10 semifinals The Masked Singer. He explained that he was “not a very nostalgic person” and despite the longevity and public appreciation for Hall & Oates’ music, “I’ve evolved. I’ve progressed overall. I have other things to do.”

Nevertheless, he was happy about the shared success of his long-standing employees.

“I have an incredible amount of respect and am really, really grateful for the success that Daryl and I have had,” Oates shared. “We have done something over a period of 50 years that not many people can ever say they have done in their lives or careers.”

“It was a great thing for me, I’m really proud of it and I’m really happy about it,” Oates added. “And I know these songs will live forever.”

Hall & Oates was formed in 1967 and released 18 studio albums. They were successful with six No. 1 singles, including “Maneater,” “Rich Girl” and “Out of Touch.” Although both individual artists pursued solo careers and separate tours, the duo never officially broke up. Their most recent studio album “Home for Christmas” was released in 2006 and their last appearance together was in October 2022.

One year later, Hall filed a lawsuit against Oates.

Hall filed a complaint in November 2023 against Oates and the co-trustees of the John W. Oates TISA Trust, including Oates’ wife Aimee Oates, seeking a preliminary injunction. The court issued an interim injunction at that time.

ET confirmed the existence of the lawsuit in Nashville Chancery Court.

Accordingly The Associated PressOates is seeking to divest his interest in Whole Oats Enterprises LLP to Primary Wave IP Investment Management LLC. Hall’s lawsuit and following interim disposal against his bandmate has now temporarily blocked the sale as the legal proceedings continue in court.

The outlet reported that Hall sued Oates, claiming that Oates’ attempt to sell his interest in Whole Oats Enterprises LLP violated the terms of a business agreement that the Hall & Oates duo forged years ago. In addition to the lawsuit, an arbitrator must also weigh in before the sale can take place.
