“Jack Dorsey Calls X ‘Freedom Tech’ After Leaving Bluesky’s Board”

Blue sky confirmed Jack Dorsey’s departure from the board of the decentralized social media company on Sunday. Earlier this weekend, Twitter’s founder and former CEO tweeted a simple “no” in response to a user’s questions to announce his exit from Bluesky, a platform he helped create.

“We sincerely thank Jack for his help in funding and initiating the Bluesky Project,” Bluesky said in a statement Social media post. “Following Jack’s departure, we are seeking a new board member for nonprofit Bluesky who shares our commitment to building a social network that puts people in control of their experiences.”

Bluesky and Dorsey have not yet revealed why the Twitter founder left the board. Dorsey first announced the Bluesky project Twitter in 2019, called it “an open and decentralized standard for social media.” Bluesky originally started as an invite-only social media platform, but this year it became open to everyone and now appears to have around four million users signed up. Dorsey’s departure doesn’t seem to bode well for the emerging platform.

Dorsey had an active weekend on his old platform X. The Twitter founder unfollowed him more than 2,000 accounts, and now only follows Elon Musk, Edward Snowden and Stella Assange. In the meantime, he intervened Kendrick and Drake’s rap beef quite a lot. In a tweet on Saturday, he also appeared to call X a “freedom technology” and warned users not to rely on companies to grant rights.

NBC News reported last week that federal prosecutors are investigating the financial transactions of another Jack Dorsey company, Block. New York prosecutors are reviewing documents that reportedly show “years of compliance violations” at Block related to economically sanctioned countries and the processing of terrorist groups’ crypto transactions. Block told NBC that there is an “extensive compliance program.”

Bluesky and Block did not immediately respond to Gizmodo’s request for comment.

Dorsey resigned He will step down from Twitter’s board in 2022, leaving the hugely popular social media company he founded. As Business Insider points out that in a 2023 interview, Dorsey called some of Musk’s early decisions with Twitter “pretty reckless” and “impatient.” However, the Twitter founder also said at the time that he had “confidence in his new CEO.”

End of 2023, Dorsey has deleted his Bluesky account While he posted on another decentralized social media, Nostr, that he was “clearing out a lot of the noise.” It’s unclear what’s next for Dorsey, although it seems like the Twitter founder is moving further and further away from Bluesky.
