Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 6 wickets in the first match on Friday (March 22). IPL 2024 to open their account in the IPL points table.
Chasing 174, the reigning champions crossed the finish line with eight balls remaining. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra added 38 runs for the first wicket before the former departed for 15. Ravindra and Ajinkya Rahane then shared a 33-run stand for the second wicket. Karn Sharma broke the stand by dismissing Ravindra for 37.
The likes of Rahane (27) and Daryl Mitchell (22) got the first starts but failed to convert them into big scores as CSK faltered at 110 for 4 in the 13th over. However, Shivam Dube (34*) and Ravindra Jadeja (25*) shared an unbeaten stand of 66 runs to get their team caught in the 19th over.
Earlier in the game, RCB posted a challenging total of 173 for 6 in the allotted 20 overs. Captain Faf du Plessis looked in good form, hitting seven fours in the first four overs before he was dismissed for 35 by Mustafizur Rahman. In the same over, the Bangladesh pacer dismissed Rajat Patidar for a duck.

In the following over, Deepak Chahar also joined the party by sending back Glenn Maxwell for a duck, leaving RCB reeling at 42 for 3 from 41 for no loss. A 35-run stand between Virat Kohli and Cameron Green followed before Mustafizur struck twice again in one over to send back both batters and reduce RCB to 78 for 5.
When RCB was in deep trouble, Anuj Rawat and Dinesh Karthik came to their rescue. The duo shared a brilliant 96-run stand for the sixth wicket and helped their team to a competitive score. Rawat scored 48 off just 25 balls before being run out on the last ball of the innings.
On the other hand, Karthik scored an unbeaten 38 off 26 balls. For CSK, debutant Mustafizur picked up 4 wickets for 29 runs.

Thanks to the win, CSK has opened its place in the IPL points table while RCB will have to wait at least one more game for it.
